In any case, it is not clear how having a gay alumni to sing at an event in honor of Dr. Conn is an endorsement of gay marriage or of gayness in general.

Would you condone it at your local church?

So, if your staff and wife planned a Anniversary Party for your 30 years at your church - and invited a former male member who had recently married another man to sing at the party in your honor - you would think that's no big deal? I am just asking. I mean, are you trying to get him saved? Love him back into the body? I am serious. What is the goal here? What about the kids who are present when he is put up like a celebrity and sings and is approved and applauded? I really would like to know your thoughts on this. And if one like the Prophet Samuel or John the Baptist is present - are you going to try to keep the two apart for the evening? That could be bad.

You have a wedding at you church. Do you screen the special singers and only allow those living without sin? Acts-celerater

I would never 'condone' homosexual sex acts in any way. If hypothetically I had a friend who was gay who wanted to sing at a banquet in my honor, and his song and demeanor were not in any way promoting homosexualism, I would be happy my friend wanted to show his appreciation for me. It really would depend on his/her attitude (whether blatantly and proudly gay and flaunting it or just more or less acting normal and just wanting to appreciate me with a song).

Here's the thing for me. I personally find homosexuality and the very idea of two men having sex just about the most repulsive thing I can imagine, and I have never wavered a single bit with regard to the sinfulness of homosexual acts. For some reason I can't rightly figure out, though, I have had several friends who were gay, and have had more than one homosexual come to me as a pastor for counseling.

One thing I do know is that hatefully ostracizing them from God's house is not what I think Jesus would do at all, and another thing is that gays are quite sure all Bible believing Christians like myself absolutely despise them and want nothing to do with them. I just don't see how being hateful and hostile towards anybody because of their sin is helpful. I am not saying we must accept their unnatural abominable acts, or not preach and teach against their sin, not at all. God/Jesus is opposed to EVERY sin, and commands all men everywhere to repent. But for some reason we seem to want to especially hate gays.

Assuming that I'm in charge of the wedding & that I know who the singers are yes indeed. If I don't know anything about them then of course I don't know to screen them out.
In the case at Lee Univ. they knew the dude was married to another dude.
This is a horrible thing for a Pentecostal Univ. to embrace & to want to sweep it all away because after all the guy was a former Lee grad & he sings well.

Maybe somebody will have the will power to look into this & ask the right questions & consider censure of the party responsible for approving the music guest list.

One thing for sure ...I don't hate anybody & I don't hate gays!
I especially do not understand nor can I comprehend their perversion, but I refuse to hate the individual.
But it just so happens that the gays of our society live in a utopian bubble protected by more laws than a baby growing in the womb.
If our country made them figure out a way to exist like all other minorities then it would be different I suppose but that isn't the case. The facts are we protect them & isolate them from being bullied.

We just had the former A/G Gen. Sup. of the country of Ghana as a guest here at our church & he said he cannot understand how we allow them to live such a protected existence. He said in his country it's still against the law to even hint that you're gay. I remember a time when our churches believed the same way.
But we are gradually bit by bit giving in to the culture that accepts & promotes those who are gay & we abide by the one sided laws that keep them in power.

I've said for years this would happen in our churches some day & I still say it will get even worse unless the Lord returns.

Post I do not, nor will I... lesserpower
I won't send one of my kids to Lee... I will not recommend it to our kids who graduate at church... We give three scholarships a year, but Lee isn't on our list of schools we will pay out to. This is an inevitable result of a perpetual slide that has been playing out for the past several years. When parishioners began asking questions about whether Lee was still a Christian institution, I had to stop supporting it.

FWIW, Neil lived next door to me for a year, he was a nice guy (I'm sure he still is) and I didn't know he was a homosexual. I felt terrible when I heard it years later, I pray for him when I think about it. Jesus loves him.

Post Interesting issue ... Mat
Interesting issue, is Lee University committed to continuing in the historic role in the denomination or does its celebrate its current "success" (embodied in the leader who has transformed the institution) even when core values of the denomination are disregarded? Which is more important?

Dean, I'm curious about something you said:

"The facts are we protect them & isolate them from being bullied."

Are you saying that we should allow them to be bullied?

QW you're smarter than that, the ridiculous notion you insinuate via a question is somewhat insulting.
No, I do not advocate in any form the notion that somebody should be bullied.

You don't get in trouble for voicing your opinion when you speak your mind about any group of people but if you say anything negative about muslims or gays you're in hot water.

Thank you for clarifying. It just sounded to me as if you thought gays not being protected from being bullied would somehow be preferable. [Insert Acts Pun Here]

When was the line crossed that made whomever made this decision believe it would be acceptable?

I'm in a tough situation here.

I wholeheartedly believe in Lee.
I send my kids there.
I know many of the professors there - they go over and above any professors at any other University - I know - I work at a secular university.

This is / was wrong. Not sure why someone felt they could "in your face" all the Leaders, the sacrifice that went before - to have a campus where Christ is King.

Has a slippery slope been opened now - or as sheepdog points out - when did Lee hit the slippery slope?

Perhaps this worry about Hillary eliminating funding to Christian universities was misplaced.
Maybe we are ready to trade it in at the drop of a hat.

Post And In Closing.... mytwocents
Here are my final thoughts:

-I think having the person in question sing was at 'least' a great lack of wisdom on someone's part (I don't know who invited and approved the guests).

But, I cannot read any intent into it.

I would caution any of us about reading intent into it.

If you are bothered, then do what Jesus said, call Dr. Conn, or the Dean of the Music department and ask 'why'?

I ain't bothered.

I'm just curious.

Over the years several Church of God preachers have informed me that if the Church of God ever compromised on homosexuality they were "gone".

It's always a question of direction, not distance.

When one takes even a small step in the wrong direction the outcome is disaster. Unless there is a course correction.

What would Ray H. Hughes do? Shocked

How does having someone with sin in their life sing at a banquet equal endorsing their sin?

The CoG has repeatedly made its stand quite clear in resolutions and in its Practical Commitments, in recent years especially, against homosexual behavior and same-sex marriage. We are not, as a denomination, on a 'slippery slope' with regard to this issue.

On property belonging to the Church of God, Cleveland, TN.

That seems to be the issue.

My point is that radical homosexuals are looking for any opportunity to press their agenda.

If a known homosexual is allowed to perform on Church of God property, why can't "other" homosexuals?

Has a legal door been opened?
