The headlines they quoted show foolish ignorance. The Bible never says Israel wiped out the Canaanites outside of the borders of Israel, and makes reference to Lebanon, Tyre and Sidon still existing. And of course, it is clear that the Canaanites were not wiped out in Israel. Carthage was also founded by Canaanites/Phoenecians. Hannibal was said to have made an oath to Baal before leading his attack on the Roman Empire from the north. So Jews and Romans had had a historic common enemy.

In centuries past, many Lebanese converted to Christianity.

Some theological questions:

Should Messianic Jews marry Christian Lebanese?

Can the Canaanite now enter the assembly of the LORD? Is that the same thing as the Christian church?

Btw, some of the Lebanese are very good-looking. If the surrounding Canaanites, I can see why Israelites men were tempted to intermarry or to go to Baal worship ceremonies for free barbecue and free sex. Those idolatrous fertility rituals must have made frat parties seem like a meeting of the chess club. Baalam relied on these temptations to entice Israel with parties that involved eating barbecue sex with Midianite and Moabite women, when he couldn't get God to curse Israel before doing so.

Post What does it say ... Mat
What does it say about the Jewish women when there had to be a commandment not to marry outside the race?

I worked for a Lebanese family quite a few years ago. They were Greek orthodox. I briefly dated one of them. Smile Yes some of them are quite attractive. Didn't know I was dating a Canaanite Laughing

Post I didn't see anything contradicting the Biblical account, and in fact bonnie knox
the article states "...results complement Biblical accounts of the Canaanites...." according to a genetic data expert at the company that sponsored the research.

Okay, I guess you were responding to the headlines cited in the article famousflavius posted and not the article I linked to in the OP.

There supposedly were several other articles written about this finding that claimed the Bible was inaccurate based on the erroneous notion that it claims Israel actually DID wipe out all Canaanites.

I can see making an article showing that the Bible doesn't teach the Canaanites weren't wiped out. Outside of the borders, this should really be an non-issue. There are some really Biblically ignorant people writing religious articles out there. The Economist's writer displayed a bit of ignorance of eschatology one Oral Robert's obituary. You'd think the big periodicals would get people who knew about religion to write these things. Anyone can put up a blog, and they can be even worse than the mainstream news.

I saw an article that argued that this discovery is evidence for the Bible. But I don't expect unbelievers to be shocked by the news that many people live in Lebanon now were descended from the ancient Lebanese.

Actress Salma Hayek says she is half Lebanese.

Maybe they looked like Wonder Woman or Black Widow.

It could be the Hebrew women were less likely to be at barbecue, sex, and wine parties than the surrounding pagans.
