As a youngster in the COG there were no Mega churches as we know them now. I was in North Carolina and the Mega churches then ran 350-500 in Sunday School. Churches then were judged by the # in SS. In NC we had Kannapolis, Parkwood in Charlotte, South Gastonia and McDuffey St in South Carolina. These churches changed pastors Fairly regular and stayed about the same while growing churches in their area, they were called the Mother Church.
These churches seldom if ever dropped in attendance with a pastoral change, they were sort of a 'model' to shoot for.
Now with the mega church it seems it is built more around a personality. JMO. Seldom does a pastor leave these churches and when he does, it seems to drop like a rock in attendance too many times.
From the statistics i read we are not losing people in the COG, but I attend so many churches that seat 300 (and did at one time) but now have around a 100 in worship, many times much less. Are the gains shown on statistics only in mega churches?
In many of these areas jobs have left and the young married folk have moved to where the jobs are. Are Mega churches a result of this? _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!
