When traveling to other countries, do you attempt to speak what you can pick up of the language? |
Yes. It's fun and/or fair and creates part of the experience of traveling. |

This quote and my memories of being a Meester in Peru recently led me to create this poll. _________________ Signature Themes: Connectedness | Futuristic | Ideation | Intellection | Learner |

My very first trip overseas was |
Phil Hoover |
a wake-up call to me....
I flew from Travis AFB, California to Ramstein AB, West Germany nonstop.
When I landed at Ramstein, I had to get over to the train station in Kaiserslautern, (HauptBonhof) and travel up to Frankfurt--where I had never been before.
Someone directed me to the Officer's Club on Ramstein, and said I could catch a taxi to the Train station there.
I found my way over to the O Club, and asked the lady at the front office to get me a cab. She asked if I spoke any German, and I said "no." I then said, "Well, in the United States I...." and she stopped me in mid-sentence, and said, "Mr Hoover, you are not in the United States now, you are in West Germany. Let me give you a little advice. Here's a language guide...use it as much as you can. It will make your traveling much easier, and you'll have a great time in Europe."
I took her advice...I still have that language guide.

Why didn't she call you Private Hoover? (No clue how Officer's Clubs work.) _________________ Signature Themes: Connectedness | Futuristic | Ideation | Intellection | Learner |

1. I wasn't in the Army, so I would be a "private"
2. I was in the Air Force, so she would have used either "Airman" or "Sergeant"
3. I'm a male, so using "Mr." is always a safe bet. _________________ There is a ROCK between me and a hard place. His name is JESUS.

There's no way to tell from a person's bars on his shoulder or from the ID you must have had to have given her to show you belonged in an Officer's Club to tell whether someone is an Airman or Sergeant? When in Mexico staying for a weekend at Rosarito Beach, we became quite friendly with the waiter...and he spoke fluent English, so we tried to reciprocate with our broken "Spanglish" as we call it here......and I made the mistake of ordering eggs and a young boy. Somehow I put emplasis on the wrong syllable... |

So far two people have said "No for other reasons." My curiosity would love to hear what those reasons are if you don't mind. _________________ Signature Themes: Connectedness | Futuristic | Ideation | Intellection | Learner |

For some reason I grew up on the pharse..
When in Rome you do as the Romans do.
I guess that would take in learning their language.
Don't get upset with them when they don't understand what your saying when your speaking in your own native language..as some aliens do here in America when they move here. _________________ I live in my own little world.

Been out of the country a few times, and at least two of those were to British Columbia. When I was in Mexico I had to try because I had no interpreter. In fact, in my small group I spoke the best Spanish with my two years of HS Spanish class. In Brazil I used my Spanish background to try to come up with Portuguese. It went pretty well, but we always had at least 2 english speaking Brazilians with us at all times. _________________

I've only traveled to Canada and Mexico (Chihuahua) (spelling). Since I've not had Spanish, my communication was very weak. I've learned a little having lived in Florida and we have Spanish neighbors, but I'm not very good at it. But, I enjoyed trying out what little I knew and in trying to pick up more words.
However, I think I spoke quite fluently when I traveled in two other foreign countries. Mississippi and Arkansas ! _________________ Steve LaFever |

When I travel to Alabama I always try to pick up a little of their language to help communicate. It's tough though, some of those words- and I'm from the south!
Actually I have traveled a fair amount in Spanish speaking countries, and have picked up a little of the language. Wish I knew more, but not enough I guess to take classes yet. |
