FREED FROM SIN
"Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:34-36
How does the Son make us free from sin?
"For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin." Rom. 6:5-7
"He who has died is free from sin."
We get free from sin by dying.
The Son makes us free by uniting us with Him in His death.
Our freedom comes by our death, not our effort.
Our freedom comes by our faith in what He accomplished at the cross - that He died our death.
He accomplished the death of our old man.
He made us free indeed by putting our death in our past.
We aren't dying to sin. We are dead to sin.
We were "crucified with Him" and our "body of sin" can be done away with.
We are no longer slaves but sons.
"So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not."
Rom. 7:17,18
Believers, you are no longer "in the flesh", no longer committing sin, no longer a slave of sin.
You are no longer being judged according to the flesh.
You are "no longer...the one doing it" when you sin.
This Truth doesn't free you TO sin, it frees you FROM sin.
This Truth empowers you to control your "body of sin", your "mortal body", where sin dwells, where "nothing good" dwells.
"Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace." Rom. 6:11-14
We are not dying to sin. We are "dead to sin".
As you believe or "consider" or "know the truth" that you are "dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus", you find the power to war against lust, offer your body to God as a living sacrifice and "not let sin reign in your mortal body".
It's the Truth that your death to sin is in your past, that you are dead to sin, that empowers you to put the sin in your body to death, _________________ I'm not saved because I'm good. I'm saved because He's good!
