As is true of many historical events, there are at times some slight differences in documenting what happened. Wikipedia says the song was first sung in 1912, another site says it was 1913 in a barn where a Methodist church was meeting.
At that time, the Methodists were the "Holy Rollers" of the day. When President Taft visited one of their massive Camp Meetings, his security rushed him out of the meeting when over 800 "swooned" to the ground. Security was worried the people had been poisoned.
That account is found the the book, "Organized To Beat Te Devil." It was written by an early Editor of the "Reader's Digest."
