Question about what Dr. Walkers Grandson said |
JLarry |
While speaking at Dr. Walkers funeral his grandson (don't know his name) said: "I believe in the Holy Spirit and I believe in the Holy Catholic Church.
I am puzzled at that.
He said some good and funny things about Dr. Walker. _________________ Recorded Sermons @ www.pastorwiley.com

This is part of The Apostle's Creed, the oldest creed of the Christian church. In this case, it is the catholic church with a small "C." The word "catholic" means universal, and the "catholic church" (small "C") is the universal church or the ecumenical church—the full body of Christ, including all believers in Christ, usually considered to be made up of the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Protestant denominations.
The Apostle's Creed dates back to 140 AD and has a few English translations. The version from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England states:
Quote: | I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,[b]
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The holy Catholick Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.
Amen. |
The more contemporary United Methodist Book of Worship translates it as:
Quote: | I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting. Amen |

You have to remember some things... |
Aaron Scott |
Bro. Walker and Mt. Paran were NOT "plain ol' southern Pentecostals."
Bro. Walker wasn't even born in the south, but in, I believe, North Dakota. He lived in the south (Cleveland, I imagine), due to his father Paul Haven Walker being a leader in the Church of God (I believe he was even Asst. General Overseer).
Walker was progressive to the point of controversy. Certainly, Mt. Paran was probably 20 years ahead of the general Church of God in terms of outward adornment and the such. Further, when he took in members, he did not read the Church of God teachings, but accepted them as members if they were saved and wished to join.
If you stripped away all the negatives and immorality of Earl Paulk, replacing it with a strong moral life and solid, doctrinal preaching, you would find that they both had world-class artistry (music, theater/plays, and the such) represented in their churches, were unconventional in many ways with the Church of God (Earl Paulk was raised in the COG), and were uber-progressive.
Bro. Walker is by all measures one of the best pastors ever. Even today, there are things that he did and ways he went that I may be years behind on fully accepting. But as they say, you can't argue with results. He wasn't preaching a watered-down gospel, and yet he was the largest church in our denomination for years (even today, it's one of our largest).
He was so controversial that, according to the memorial service video, he had pastored the largest church for 14 years before they every placed him on a board, etc. In fact, I recall him turning down the GO position, feeling God was not yet releasing him. And then, he went straight from pastoring to General Overseer--something no one else has done (first becoming state overseers, etc.). |

When you say 'progressive', you don't mean marrying gays, wanting high taxes, considering all whites to be inheretly racist, etc? 'Progressive' is a tainted term these days. |
