Could In Vitro Fertilization Qualify as a Virgin Birth? |
Old Time Country Preacher |
Consider this hypothetical:
A 17 year old young woman is a virgin, i.e., she has never engaged in sexual relations with a man.
Eggs are taken from her body and undergo in vitro fertilization.
The eggs are then placed back in her body.
Still she has never engaged in sexual relations with a man.
The baby/fetus develops full term and at 9 months is born.
Still she has never engaged in sexual relations with a man.
Would this qualify as a virgin birth? |

I'll say yes, but I'll reserve the right to backtrack depending on where you're going with this, lol. |

No, not in the sense of Jesus' virgin birth... |

At the point in time, there was no such thing as IVF. The point of Mary saying she had never known a man was that she was saying, in so many words, "How can this happen since there is no seed/fertilization?"
In IVF, there is fertilization. But that is PRECISELY the point of a miraculous "Virgin Birth." That is, it is not really about the woman never having had sexual relations, although that certainly is related to the actual point. The actual point is that it is impossible for her to conceive seeing that there is NO fertilization or seed from a man AT ALL--not through the natural sexual process and not through the IVF process. |

Ole Timer, I just feel for you, bein a ole time country preacher from tha hollers of Kentucky an comin acrost all kinds of stuff on that computer of yourn like IVF. And it makes ya ast all sorts a questions that ya probably wouldna thought to ast otherwise.
But come ta think of it, ya might a heard about such stuff on the radio. The late sportscaster Bill Curie told his radio audience that watchin State and Duke in the 1968 ACC Tournament--back in tha days when there weren't no shot clock-- was bout as "excitin as artificial insemination." They called that feller the Mouth of the South and I reckon the name suited him. |

It would STILL be by human will and action, which Scripture clearly defines as THE difference between natural conception and what we call THE Virgin Birth.
Of course, you and everyone else here knows that which makes the question sort of pointless. Yes, a female that has not had intercourse can be artificially inseminated, so what is the end/point of this thought? _________________ Live an epiK life!

The reason fer the question is that its Christmas time an I been seein a lot of late about the virgin birth. I got to thankin that with the advent a modern science, IVF, an such, that it is technically possible fer a woman to have a youngun, as King James would say, "having never knowed a man." A virgin birth is possible in our time as well.
1. No, such a virgin birth IS NOT miraculous.
2. No, the father would not be God.
3. No, the child would/could not serve as a vicarious sacrifice for sin.
But just in the sense of sayin "virgin birth," it could happen today. |

Why would she go and do somethin' like that? That would be a foolish thing to do. _________________ Link |

No. Like the seed of Adam. Corrupted by sin and passed down to us. The Adamic nature. _________________ On Target!! |
