We canceled |
brotherjames |
And we had only about 3 in of snow and 1/2 of ice but because I live in the Carolina's where they are too cheap to buy salt for the county and city side streets we are trapped at home until it melts. I moved here from NE Oh 15 years ago and this is a joke. The interstates are clear, the main city streets are clear but the side streets and suburb county roads are impassable. It's time to get this state into the 21st century. It is no longer acceptable to just say with a smile, it'll melt eventually. Schools will be canceled tomorrow and some businesses won't open and employees won't be able to get to work because of the either cheap or ignorant or both county administrations in this region. I'm tired of it
Buy some salt!!!. |

See what I mean-- someone trying to tell us how the way they did it up North is so much better.

Our area had a black ice advisory until noon. The automated message sent out by our church last night said Sunday school was canceled but 11:00 worship service would be available for all who could "safely" get there. |

If you don't care about people's safety when all they have to do is buy some salt then I guess those Southern Values are fine then. |

The big C's might be cheap but try Illinois. we wrote the book on this. Oh -also in that book is " Effective Corruption " , " Governors in Jail " and " How not to pay your Bills and get away with it. " |

It's silly to say I don't care about people's safety, but I guess if you don't like Southern values, the South isn't the place for you. |

Actually I am from the South* |

Love the South, but I lived up North long enough to appreciate how to remove a small amount of ice and snow and keep things moving. It's called salt. Just doing nothing is not acceptable. It's unsafe and generally stupid. If they need more money, then ask for it.
(*) Related to Robt. E Lee so I think my Southern pedigree is just fine thanks. |

I'm sure Ohio averages a lot more snow per year the central part of North Carolina. The issue is probably not so much the salt as the equipment and manpower to spread it. If it is something that happens rarely, the much greater budget it would take to salt all the side roads and subdivisions might not be justified. It would be like me buying a four-wheel drive that I would only need two days a year. Or buying snowshoes.
But if you really are Southern, you might just want to take matters into your own hands, get you a Bobcat and plow your own street, or get you a four-wheel drive pickup and ride around to see who you can pull out of the ditch. Put you a rebel flag across the back window if you ain't ashamed of your relations. |

That rebel flag |
brotherjames |
Might be an issue with about a third of my congregation that is African American. I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle but it doesn't work too well on ice. As to equipment used once a year, they have the trucks all they have to do is buy some salt to put in them. I don't care if they plow as there is little snow but ice is a different matter. I like the South but living in Mayberry is getting old.[/i] |

Well, as Andy Taylor might say, "They's got to be somebody a drivin that truck."
It's not just the equipment; it's also the manpower (as I mentioned).
Not to mention, that salt ain't gonna help a bit when it gets down to 19 degrees tonight.

So forget the flag, just make sure your congregation doesn't know you get on the internet, complain about where you live, and brag about being related to Robert E. Lee. |

Salt works below 19 |
brotherjames |
And if it gets too cold you add calcium chloride to it and it will melt anything. And as to drivers pay, I will chip in my part to the already exhoribant taxes I pay already if they'll actually do something constructive with the money (see the post about Illinois and corruption) it's no different in the South. Wasn't bragging about Lee, just making a point to you about your aspersions and I have made known my feelings about this aspect of Southern living to my congregation previously and many concur. " it's the way we've always done it" applies to more than churches and it is no excuse for not changing a bad policy. |

We are originally from Central NC. Big area. I heard later they had some meet for prayer and fellowship.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea. Just 30 minutes ago, 1 mile from the church, a girl left the road, tore into one of our houses and totaled a car in the drive. The pastor may have been wiser than I from a distance.
WE just got cold down here, no ice or snow in central Florida! _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

No, you wanted to act a little holier-than-thou by saying you wouldn't fly the confederate flag, but at the same time wanted to tout Southern credentials by claiming relationship to Robert E. Lee (who fought for said flag).
Okay, I was thinking of the brine they spray at first which is only good for temps down to 29 degrees.
I don't know if there is government corruption which keeps the DOT from salting your street. Somehow I suspect that's not the issue.

I have traveled in all 50 states and 26 countries. In all my travels and places I have lived, the only people who can drive in Snow must be Eskimos. Because anyone who lives further north than I always told me we did not know how to handle snow.
I did ask one Canadian why so many cars there had dents in them in the winter.
There are good and bad points to salt. The spreaders cost between 10k & 30k to be adapted to dump trucks. And in my area of NC they would be used about every 5 years. The cost vs time lost on the job always comes to what Bro. James said, "It will melt" in council meetings. Truth is, it will. Now in OHIO and MIssouri it will NOT melt, and they do need the salt and sand. I prefer sand.
But Bro. James can come on down, he could have replaced our preacher this morning, whose skivvies seemed to be in a wad. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!
