Actually he does have the power in these times. The states
Do not have the authority to close down international commence that
Shuts down an Economy of 2.2 trillion dollars. One state a lone can’t decide
To close down when doing so causes pain for other states. I read a piece on cnn that said he would win that argument in the Supreme Court.

However, Trump being ever savy political man realized the position he was in. There is no good answer. Open it up and people get sick than you are to blame. Keep it shut and people have no money than you are to blame. So the best thing to do is what he did let the governors deal with their own people and set back and enjoy the show.

If I could tell Trump politely, I would. Alas, even what I said will have zero effect.

Only a baseball bat will shut him up. AND I VOTED FOR--AND WILL VOTE FOR--HIM.

Trump has the authority!

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/04/explainer-trump-authority-adjourn-congress-200416182101206.html
But his power to do so is there in black and white. The Constitution says the president "may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper".

Dean, that statement by Trump concerned recess appointments for judges, not power over states and their COVID-related closures.

But you might want to check your facts about it anyway. Here is an article from very right-wing (and generally pro-Trump) legal scholar Andy McCarthy dispelling that understanding of Article II section 3:

I was gently responding to something you had said earlier but I didn't reference you as I was being rushed to leave where you wrote:
" ...If you want to believe your power is absolute, have at it buddy."

His power may not be absolute authority as a king once had but his power over congress is strong enough to adjourn them if absolutely needed.

From the left leaning Washing post:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/04/16/adjourn-congress-trump-constitution/
Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution provides that the President “may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper.” What may not be clear from this text, but is abundantly clear from the Constitution’s context, is that the adjournment power was meant to limit the president — to confine to exactly one circumstance the power to send Congress home prematurely.

If you'll read that article by Andy McCarthy, you'll find that's not quite the case. It's a great article by a great legal scholar -- and one who is bigly pro-Trump most of the time. I highly recommend it. Smile [Insert Acts Pun Here]

I did read it but he leaves a lot of holes in places that can be filled with loops lol
WaPo actually explains it a bit better - I understand it would be a stretch but he could do it if it had to be done which is why I think he backed off of the pulpit & the grandstanding.

Fair enough on the subject of adjournment and recess appointments. Smile

I still say he's got a whole lot of nothing when it comes to ordering states to re-open, though. Federalism ain't what it used to be!

You're probably right & besides that he needs to pick his battles wisely over the next 5 months or so.
After November, if he wins, he'll probably bring out the big hammer & swing away for a year or three before he tries to set the stage for Pence.

Post That's okay because Trump wont be reelected jimmyjon
Didnt you know Michelle is going to be Bidens VP choice and when they get all the minority votes again, after poor Joe is elected, the day after the inauguration Joe will be declared non compis mantis under the 25th amendment and Michelle will take his place and she and Hussein will rule for another 8 years. Ain't it a grand plan? I read it on CNN.com. The scary thing is, it could happen or something like it. My wife has said for 4 years Michelle will be our next President. Hey, DOC
