It sounds crazy to us now, but in the early 1800's, female Evangelist Dorothy Ripley, a British woman who had come to America to preach, met incredible persecution. There was much resistance against women being preachers.
One attempt to discredit her was when she was accused of prostitution. As did most evangelists, offerings were her livelihood. There were times when men who had heard her preach, gave in the offering to support her.
