Theologically Errant Songs |
Bishopinsc |
I posted this under another heading but wanted to see if anyone had any more examples of deficient or just plain wrong theology in Christian music (of whatever kind):
The song That's The Man I'm Looking For says (in part):
"If you see a Man in Sandals
Please send Him down my way.
That might be my Jesus
He's coming back someday."
This is ridiculous in that Christ will not return in such a manner according to His own words. This only sets people up to accept false Christs and even the Antichrist if they are looking for a man in sandals walking down the street. Furthermore, if it were the real Christ, no one would have to turn Him down any street because He would know where everyone lived. Thus, the song is wrong and (IMO) silly.
Are there other "Christian" songs which espouse clearly unChristian doctrine or concepts? _________________ BiSC |

Here's one that I actually love -- beautiful melody, excellent flow, sounds pretty good except for the last line:
Above all powers above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began
Above all kingdoms above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasure of the earth
There's no way to measure what You're worth
Crucified laid behind a stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all
Michael W. Smith wrote a good song, but when Christ was crucified and "took the fall" was he really thinking of me? Or was He thinking of bringing glory to the Father through obedience? _________________ I reserve the right to own my words and thoughts without edits. |

Pastor Gary have you been playing with the Calvinists again?
I would make a case it was both. The Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost. He came so that we could have life. But, yes He came to glorify the Father...Smitty is looking at it through a certain perspective...and I wouldn't say it's theologically errant myself. There's a lot better examples out there.

No. I actually first heard that song mentioned in such a discussion by a very fine Pentecostal brother. Why is Calvinistic to say that Christ on the cross had his mind on the Father's glory? _________________ I reserve the right to own my words and thoughts without edits. |

When We All Get to Heaven... |
Roger Wade |
When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We'll sing and shout the victory
First of all "we all" ain't going to get to heaven
Second When we see Jesus, we won't be singing or shouting, we will be laying face down in worship, because he will be magnificent. |

Michael W. has to be right because |
Min Music |
.I think it was Rusty Goodman that sung:
"When He was on the Cross, I was on His mind".
The song that I think of was...
"Send it on down"
My pastor (at the time) was quick to tell the whole congregation that "The Holy Ghost ain't an "It", He's a person..." - right after I led the choir in the song - and the whole church was a-shoutin' |

In actuality, if you want to be picky, EVERYTHING was on Jesus' mind when He was on the cross because He was omniscient. |

One thing that bugs me about that otherwise superb song of MWS is that it is not the case that God thought of any one individual "above all." It is plainly the case scripturally that Christ died for ALL, and so it is simply not true that he thought of MWS or any other particular person above "above all." I've got to find a better way to rephrase that line, because otherwise it's really a beautiful and worshipful song...
Maybe, "You took the fall, and showed us love, above all."
Or perhaps, "...and thought of love, above all."
This is a good example of why I probably shouldn't be trying to write song lyrics.
Or maybe, "...displayed God's love, for all" _________________ "Of course we are concerned about people voting if they are dead," George Stanton, chief information officer for the New York State Board of Elections. Poughkeepsie Journal, October 29, 2006

Another thing about that song that is not scriptural is the line that says, "My debt to pay." _________________ "Of course we are concerned about people voting if they are dead," George Stanton, chief information officer for the New York State Board of Elections. It is true that the old-timers generally placed great emphasis on heaven, but didn't Paul talk about his desire to depart from this life and to be with Christ? _________________ "Of course we are concerned about people voting if they are dead," George Stanton, chief information officer for the New York State Board of Elections. Jesus himself said that His knowlege was in fact limited during his earthly ministry. He said only the Father knew the time of His return, and that the Son didn't. _________________ "Of course we are concerned about people voting if they are dead," George Stanton, chief information officer for the New York State Board of Elections. I would say |
arcticgolfer1 |
that music and song do not have to be 100% theologically correct. Why not? Well song is simply art. Art, by it's nature is interpretation or expression of a truth that the artists beholds. Thus we should not hold songwriters and performers out to be theologians, nor should we hold them to the same standard as a theologian, teacher, preacher.
Just for the record I would also say there is no such thing as "secular" music, as the meaning of secular is devoid of God and since it is on earth and God is omnipresent in a strict sense it can not be. Although I understand the application of the word "secular" music, simply to be that which is outside Christian thematic music. _________________ I never could tell what the sky was sayin, but these mountains... they don't keep many secrets. |
