Nice site TS. A few questions. Where is the cutoff point for your musicians and singers. As an example , when I am in the studio we look for the best of each. If a singer gets off , and most do , we give them ample chances to correct the error before replacing them or until the person paying for the CD is satisfied.
Church is completely different. If a person wants to worship with song on the praise team then the only qualification we require is that they worship is true at heart. This really hurts the quality of music at times in my opinion. If they are really bad , and some are , I just tell them that they have to practice at home for a while so that they wont disrupt or throw the other off that have practiced.
I get rather stern when a musician cannot perform a song that we have done for a while. I just tell them to turn down until they learn the song. So far this has worked well. A music ministers job is just as trying as the pastors at times. |

I personally would like to see less production and more anointing. I have seen praise teams who are told when to jump up and down and move around. Being loud doesn't mean it is anointed. It becomes more of a performance rather than a time to worship. |

I think this subject is relative to the size of the church. Larger churches hold formal auditions, while smaller churches post ads on Craigslist and appoint all who respond |

I have often wished I had required an audition before I gave someone the opportunity to sing! |

Thanks for the reply. I've been at Stevens Creek for 21 years. Over that 21 years I've seen the church grow from 200 people to this past Christmas Eve having 3600 people attend our services. A lot of things have changed over that 21 years but the one thing that hasn't is our value that excellence honors God. I expected a lot from people back then and I still do today. There is a difference in someone being a worshipper and someone being a worshipper that can sing. Don't confuse the two. I hope that helps.

Yes there is a difference. I guess with a congregation that size greater care must be taken. Its just not practical in a church of 50 people though. I wish it was. |

I hear ya. Always remember that Excellence isn't perfection it's just doing the best you can with what you have. Always set the bar high and help your people reach it. _________________ Todd Sturgell
