On building a hotel and golf empire - and getting elected President - I would say he knows more than most. Less than 50 folks EVER have been elected President of the US - so I would say he has reached a Doctor level of skill at that, and if an accredited University wants to recognize him for that huge achievement - say from their political science dept, then why not?

Now, if they gave him an honorary doctorate in business, I think I could GUARANTEE you that Trump has more business chops than even their most celebrated professor of business.
If they gave it to him for dancing or singing or theology, then, just as I look askance at "real" doctors who don't have the chops, so, too, would I look that way at Trump.
I think it gets down to a few things for me:
1) Does the person ACTUALLY have the chops? If so, then honorary or formal, it works for me.
2) If a person doesn't have the chops--and I'm sure most of us have met formal doctors that did not at all impress us--then, whether honorary or formal, it does NOT work for me.
3) Going to classes and paying for a degree in X field is but ONE PATH to a high level of competence in a particular field. Experience is certainly a better marker of doctoral-level competency than classroom time. Queen Elizabeth is going to far surpass virtually any professor of international politics; Mark Twain is going to far surpass virtually any professor of literature; Trump is going to far surpass virtually any professor of business; and there are preachers in the Church of God who, without knowing a word of Greek, can do cartwheels around professors of theology on key points of doctrine. NOTE: I DO NOT DENY THE VALUE OF A FORMAL DOCTORATE. BUT NEITHER DO I DENY THE VALUE OF AN HONORARY ONE IF THEY HONOREE IS TRULY DESERVING, ETC. |

I worked with EE's all my life. Some had a hard time with some of the basics. They still earned the degree. By how much I dont know. It doesnt say on their diploma , just that they earned the degree. You have to respect that much. |

Mat, OTCP ain't never, nor does he now live in Cleveland, or in Tennessee. Son, when ya live in the land a the pioneers, good ole Kentucky, why would ya wanna go sommers else.
This issue is revisited periodically to keep the awareness of a real ethical problem in our denomination (not just ours, the same is true for the AG, COGOP, Ind Bapt, Charismaniacs, non-denominationals, an many others) alive an well. |

For those who take the time to research the origins, practice, use of honery docterates, it is quickly found that the award IS NOT a REAL DEGREE. Many US institutions of higher learning (e.g., Cornell, Stanford, etc.) refuse to award honery's cause of the abuse and misuse of the award. The honery IS NOT, nor was it ever intended to be, a legitimate degree.
The honery is an award bestowed "IN HONOR" of something. Its usage when listed on a CV or resume is ALWAYS to be in the "Awards" section, never in the "Academic/Education" section. It WAS/IS NEVER intended to be used as the basis a title, that is, to call someone "DR."
Ever year, hunderds a honerys are give out to politicians, sports figures, philanthropists, actors, artists, musicians, (yep, an preachers), etc. Oddly, never do you hear of any of these folk begin usin the title "DR" in a professional sense. It ONLY HAPPENS AMONG PREACHERS. Fellers who crave the title. Fellers who feel it will enhance their status or add credibility to their ministry. It oughtta tell ya a thing right there that only preachers use and demand to be called "DR" based on an award.
If a feller has achieved/excelled in ministry, honor him. Honor him with respect. Calling him "DR" when he aint earned one is not honor, it is propogating a myth. Believe OTCP when he tells ya, them with the real deal know full well OTCP speaks truth. |

Yep, I know fellers what erroneously use titles, an if I commenced "namin em" we could fill a page just in the COG. But not even OTCP wants to publically shame folk. But, maybe if we shame the practice long enough, an it is a shameful practice, just maybe some folks would stop the practice.
