"If you ain't gettin' this, your spoon done fell out of the bowl."
What a great thread. Its funny, entertaining, surprising, and annoying.
It's like folklore. Some of these "isms" have been passed down and around for years....interesting variations of the same "isms."
I differ on some views expressed here, that are way too serious, IMHO. Like, this is why some people hate church, and ego trips and power and authority issues,... Its another facet of communication for some people. Its what they have learned by example, or what they may have seen been effective for them, etc.
As for me, I'm taking notes. And I don't have a problem with cheerleading. It is what SOME need at SOME times. Just like SOME times we need a hug, or correction, or training, or encouragement, or information...... Oh yeah, SOME NEED to laugh.
Okay, I'm guilty, way too serious. |

"How many knows that _______?"
over and over and over...lol
The one that is an insult to intelligence is "turn to your neighbor and say..."
and "everybody say_____"
OH how I can't stand that. LOL

I suppose I have at one time or another attended churches where one or two of those horrid sayings have slipped out, but folks I AM SERIOUS, IF OUR PASTOR USED THOSE KINDS OF USELESS, TASTELESS PHRASES while speaking, the first time, shame on him, but the second time, SHAME ON ME FOR BEING THERE LISTENING TO HIM. I am positive he would completely empty out the auditorium.
I cannot believe that any Pentecostal, God fearing normal, sane preachers still use that plebeian (look it up it means crude or coarse in manner or style) manner of speech or actions.
The most our pastor might say is "Excuse me" if he coughed or "Beg your pardon" if he mispronounced a name or place since he is relatively new to our pulpit.
I mean, come on folks, please tell me you are totally kidding. It must have been 40 years since I heard or saw that nonsense in the pulpit. _________________ Heavy traffic making you crazy? There's no traffic jam on the extra mile. Author unknown |

This may not be theologically right …
I don’t know about you but I feel the Holy Spirit in here
Expectance is the breading ground for miracles
Amen amen and amen
That it the (preacher’s name) version
You are going to have to pardon my shout
(Bold threats against people groups that are not at your church) Take that Homosexual
Gangbangers
This generation now knows nothing about tarring for God
I don’t need the world wide wed to tell me about God
The dead church across town (how does the pastor know?)
(White pastors on Martin Luther King day) I was there when. …(Lies)
Stewardship is about the member not the Church (really)
More to come hopefully |

Before Niel Bortz went national he had a local TV talk show in Marietta. I was invited as a guest to talk about racism.
On one side of me was 4 KKK members on the other side was Hosea Williams.
Neil asked me a question. I responded by saying "well to tell you the truth ................." Niel said; "Rev. you should never have to say, to tell you the truth".
I have to tell this one. I was invited back as guest on another show. I asked what the subject was, the producer said. "euthanasia", I said, "I do not know enough about the subject to be a good guest".
Actually I did not know anything about those children in China. _________________ Larry Wiley |

I find myself asking "Are there REALLY still people using that kind of hokey, cliché-laden delivery in the pulpit?? And are there REALLY people who enjoy that enough not to walk out laughing hysterically?" _________________ I reserve the right to own my words and thoughts without edits. |

we are glad you have escaped the bounds of the southern bible belt but you do not have to rub it in.

i am a blood bought, sanctified, fired up, pew jumping, isle running, bible thumping, holy roller, spirit filled, holy ghost talking, hymnal singing, gospel believing, hanky waving, cut a rug, one way, jesus freak, friend of the almighty, rock and roll hating, man of the cloth.
where is the amen when you need one. pray folks its getting quite in here.

seriously Gary-I agree with your sentiment-but I have to wonder-are all CoGOP pastors now erudite scholars who perform sound exegesis and deliver amazingly eloquent sermons? I know you're not the typical CoGOP guy...
hey I started this thread and I think it's funny-but all you have to do around here is pop in most any Baptist or pentecostal church that looks like it may have been around ten years or more, and there's a 95% chance you'll here several of these rhetorical devices.

to further amplify Joe's thoughts with one of my own...we could say that
when confronted with several posts from the legendary Old Time Country Preacher, a good portion of pastors in the south say...
um, what's your point?

When I was a teen-ager, Dady had a preacher |

The preacher preached laying on a cot! He had a good looking wife and when he going strong, he would throw his pillow and tell his wife to run and she would. _________________ Richard W. Kennedy

I'm going to say this and duck, because I do NOT mean it as slam at the COG -- just stating my personal experience.
I have visited Assembly of God, COGOP, FourSquare and COG pentecostal churches. I have visited Baptist churches. I have watched video and televised services of all of the above plus some... and the only place I have experienced any of the kind of stuff posted in this thread in the past two decades has been in a COG church in Hawaii.
There are some cultural things in the COG that seem learned behavior when viewed from the outside, frankly. It is fascinating to outsiders. _________________ I reserve the right to own my words and thoughts without edits. |
