Post i have a question about unmasking aprilmay2.0
if a person makes a name close to your user name and sends you a PM and says "who is the" and then includes a phone number (813) 421-9***

is that considered unmasking? Am I unmasking the unmasker if I call the number?

How do I handle it?

Do not call the number. That's the main thing (because it is probably just one of those temporary numbers that is used to get your number should you choose to call it).
I would say to forward the personal message to Doyle or either ignore it.

(just my opinion)

Post As usual, Bonnie's advice is wise doyle
Here is the problem if you unmask someone who is seeking to remain anonymous. If revealing who they are causes them to lose income, lose face, lose respect, lose a job or in a pastor's case, lose a church, then you are most likely libel.

Either pass the info on to me or, just reply that it is ACTS policy (which posters agree to follow when they register) not to reveal the name of anyone who wants to remain anonymous.

The rule re: unmasking is really, really simple:

Don't do it.

Oh, and another thing. I kind of prefer the term "outing" rather than "unmasking" because "unmasking" indicates that the person is actually known but is just referred to a "person A" or "person B" or whatnot. On Acts, the people are not really known and masked; they are truly anonymous if they choose to be.
(My favorite masked person is The Lone Ranger as played by Clayton Moore.)

Post i think unmasking is the correct term aprilmay2.0
the names are masked by an ip address only. if Doyle and the boys wanted to they could unmask by tracing ip's.

be reminded, this is Doyle's board. He can find out what he wants to find out. His intellectual property so....

Yes, but when we're talking about one poster and another poster (assuming that aprilmay is not doyle, lol), then the posters don't have access to the ip addresses, and so when ordinary posters reveal someone's personal info, it would be outing and not unmasking.
Besides that, there's the whole thing about using proxy servers to hide your ip address if you really want to be anonymous.
