Pagán went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on July 9, 2004. Ada was born on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico in the city of Ponce. She was saved at 15 at a Church of God. After graduating from high school, she planned to attend nursing school, but the Lord redirected her path, calling her into ministry. At 18, she enrolled at the Church of God Bible School, Interamerican Bible Institute, precursor of the prestigious Theological University of the Caribbean.

On December 18, 1965, seven months after receiving her Diploma in Missions and Ministry, she was given her marriage certificate when she joined in marriage and ministry to Víctor Pagán, who was already pastoring a church. That was the beginning of a ministry that lasted for 59 years. Even during the last stage of her life, she would lay hands on and pray for fellow residents at a memory care home.

Ada was a multi-talented human being, packed in the small frame of a 4’11’’ beautiful body. When in pastoral ministry, Víctor never needed an assistant pastor; she was an exceptional teacher and preacher. And, if needed, she had the spiritual authority and character to bring back a member gone astray.
She was a dressmaker. For years, she made her own clothes. Ada also had great pleasure in gardening. If you visit her house, you will become a witness to her skills. However, the area where she exceeded the most was as a writer. An accomplished author, she published two books on Christian poetry. In pastoral ministry, she was in charge of all the special programs. She would write up the script plays, select the actors, prepare the stage, and direct the programs.

Ada was a model as a minister’s wife, a tender and loving mother, a faithful friend, an excellent church member, a brilliant student, a gracious mother-in-law, and an amazing sister-in-law.

To her family and close friends, Ada was better known as Negui. To many others, she was known as Mamá. Although Ada will be missed by her family and friends it is still a time to celebrate her life and home going. It has been requested that family and friends celebrate by wearing colorful and joyful clothing signifying her triumphant journey.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Víctor, her three children (Danny, Milly, Javy), eight grandchildren (Josué, Yasmeen, Xavier, Alek, Yalexa, Ariana, Abdiel, Daniel), three great-grandchildren (Jacob, Naomi, Haven), and nine siblings.

Max Morris https://www.cogwm.org/max-morris/ Sun, 30 Jun 2024 17:13:43 +0000 https://www.cogwm.org/?p=23241 Read More]]> The Rev. Max Morgan Morris, 91, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at The Bridge in Ooltewah on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

Born in Talladega (Bemiston), Ala., Max was the only son of the late Elvin Lane and Dessie Morris. He attended Talladega High School, Class of 1951, and graduated from Lee College (University) in 1955. He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in 1957.

As a young man, Max was uniquely gifted, both as an athlete and a musician. Max loved to play baseball and was an outstanding pitcher for the Talladega Tigers. Throwing a “mean” knuckleball, he was scouted by major league ball clubs, including the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

From 1953 to 1955, Max held the rank of Sergeant and served as a drum major and as an assistant band director for the U.S. Army Band at Ft. Benning, Ga., as a member of the Special Troops Command.

Pursuing his calling and gifts in ministry, Max became a premier gospel music artist, using his unique piano talents to record more than 50 albums. He has written many notable gospel songs, including “I’ll Thank Him, I’ll Praise Him” and “Oh Happy Day.”

Early in his ministry, Max appeared weekly on Archie Campbell’s “The Old Country Church” and at the Friday night Grand Ole Opry Gospel Singing at Ryman Auditorium with the Meridian Street Church Special Choir, the first organized choir in the Church of God and first choir to sing at the General Assembly.

For the denomination, Max served in ministry roles as an assistant pastor at Meridian Street Church in Nashville and Tremont Church in Greenville, S.C., and as lead pastor at Lake Worth Church in Lake Worth, Fla.

As assistant director, 1966-70, of “Forward in Faith,” the international broadcasting arm for the Church of God, Max was instrumental in modernizing production and expanding the radio network coverage.

Serving on the denomination’s Music Committee and General Assembly Music Committee, Max contributed significantly to the formation and mobilization of many other notable talents in the church.

Following God’s providential plan, Max later devoted most of his evangelistic ministry life to being an encourager of others, via prayer and personal interaction.

Max founded and served as executive director of Marc Lane Ministries Inc., a nonprofit ministry organization, for nearly 50 years. Under Marc Lane Ministries, Max formed World Wide Prayer Partners (WWPP), conducted weekly television broadcasts of “A Preacher and His Piano” on the CBN television network, and operated His Hands Extended interdenominational devotionals in Cleveland twice a week for over 20 years. The devotionals were broadcast around the world as well.

He also arranged community-wide “Red-Back Hymnal Sings” in various churches, featuring Southern gospel and convention songs, along with standard hymns. Additionally, he organized faith-based Fourth of July Celebrations at Cleveland High School and First Baptist Cleveland.

Max proudly served as chairman of the board for Friends of Samaritans Place, a nonprofit dedicated to organizing events, facilitating programs, fundraising, and managing resources to support Samaritans Place and its partners in the care of and adoption placement of Philippine orphans.

A Cleveland resident with his family for nearly 60 years, Max coached Little League baseball when their sons were younger, including a state championship in 1972, and was a member of Rotary Club of Cleveland, receiving the symbolic Keys to the City for his service to the community and its common good in 2024.

Regardless of who called him, he always answered with his signature greeting: “Jesus loves you. May I help you?”

Max Morgan Morris is survived by his loving wife of almost 67 years, JoAn Atkins Morris; his sons, Michael Lane (Julie) Morris, and Marc (Marilen) Morris; grandchildren, Michael Chadwick Morris, Christopher (Destiny) Morris, Michelle (Phillip) Looney, Madison Cantrell and Samantha McMillan; and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Caspian Morris, Carmen and Magnolia Looney, Brylee Jo McMillan, and Addylyn Holland.

Also surviving are first cousins Evelyn Knight and Hugh (Vivian) Morris; extended Morris and Knight family cousins; sister-in-law DeLois (Bruce, deceased) Atkins-Kasper, brother-in-law Chuck (Susan) Atkins, and sister-in-law Maxine (Don) Hughes. Countless friends whose lives he touched across the nation and around the world also grieve his passing.

Grey Holt Robinson https://www.cogwm.org/grey-holt-robinson/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 14:20:00 +0000 https://www.cogwm.org/?p=20811 Read More]]> Reverend Grey Holt Robinson was a devout man of God. Born and raised in Lakeland, FL, he lived 87 full and beautiful years (November 10, 1936 – February 17, 2024). After being called to the ministry as a teenager while cleaning his father’s dump truck, he accepted Christ at the age of 24 and followed God’s calling of full-time ministry for 52 years of pastoring. As a Lee College (University) student, he met and married Linda, his wife of 58 years.

After graduating from Lee College, he pastored across Kentucky, Ohio, North Dakota, Georgia, and Tennessee. He was a master carpenter and could often be found creating beautiful buildings, remodeling local businesses or homes, or constructing furniture. He even assumed the general contractor role while building new church buildings in both Thomasville and Chickamauga, GA. With each drive of a nail, he was devoted to perfection.

Transitioning from full-time ministry in 2000 was a difficult decision made due to his profound vision loss, but Grey found joy in a “retirement job” at Lowes, where he developed special friendships with colleagues. Retirement didn’t diminish his commitment to Christ; instead, he embarked on mission trips, serving churches and an orphanage abroad, epitomizing selfless dedication in the name of his faith in Christ.

As an inaugural member of the Lee Singers, he was born to sing. Music was a cornerstone of his ministry. He fulfilled a dream by recording a beautiful album early in his ministry. He was a passionate teacher of the Word and music. He could often be found teaching music to choirs across the South. His base voice was easy to distinguish while making a beautiful song to the Lord.

While he was not a man of giant stature, his personality filled every room, and he always wanted to be in charge. He embodied doing all that he did to the glory of God, and he wanted to know things were done “right.” Until his death, he pursued being relevant in ministry, still singing in the choir at Westmore Church of God. He was faithful to the very end of his life.

Grey is preceded in death by his parents, A.E. and Mary Agnes (Jenkins) Robinson, his in-laws, Earnest and Ann (Todd) Lewis, and his sister, Agnes (Robinson) Sanders. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; daughter, Ami; son-in-law, Jeff; grandchildren, Jeff Jr., Brianna, and Hudson Grey; sisters, Mary Louise Selph, Linda Gilmer (David), and Margie Platt (Richard); brothers-in-law, Shelton Lewis and Charlton Lewis (Paulette); numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and his adopted Barnett family.

Ray Hutto Sanders https://www.cogwm.org/ray-hutto-sanders/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 20:50:50 +0000 https://www.cogwm.org/?p=19578 Read More]]> Ray Hutto Sanders: a church pioneer; a man of great wisdom, legendary faith, extraordinary compassion, the highest of integrity, and exemplary work ethic; a model of servant leadership; and an evangelist whose life’s direction was determined by his unwavering passion to win others to the Savior whom he loved and served so faithfully, went home to be with his Savior November 17, 2023.

Born on October 5, 1936 in Bath, SC to Darlin and Lillian (Hutto) Sanders, the third son of six children. As a young boy he contracted rheumatic fever and was not expected to live. After a Sunday prayer visit from members of the Langley Church of God, Ray heard the voice of God, “I’ve healed you for a testimony,” and after almost ten weeks of being bedfast, he marched up the steps of the church that evening, completely healed. Rebelling as a young man, he was dramatically saved when his father drove almost three hours to enter through the doors of the barbershop where he was working, hands raised and speaking in tongues, saying: “Ray, it’s going to be alright! I’ve heard from the Lord and everything is going to be alright!” That night in a rented apartment Ray knelt by his bed and surrendered his life to the Lord: “If you will save me, I’ll spend the rest of my life serving you.” And that he did! Attending Lee College (Lee University), he opened a barbershop in the basement of Walker Hall supporting the ministry of the Pioneers for Christ which eventually led to a full-time ministerial pursuit with the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), graduating with a degree in Biblical Studies in 1964 and becoming ordained as a Bishop in 1968.

While at Lee, he met and married Kathy Huckelbridge, who was his companion for 59 years. He was commissioned by the denomination to plant churches across the nation, ultimately organizing congregations and/or physically building the structures of approximately 90 churches in ten different states from Rhode Island to California and Minnesota to New Orleans. For twenty-four years, he served as a State Bishop, a position he held in five states. Twice appointed as World Missions Department Representative, totaling twenty-five years, he raised over $11 million dollars, supporting missionaries worldwide.

Over the course of his ministry he has preached over 4500 messages and led over 2500 to Christ. In recognition of his labors and accomplishments, he was appointed to various international boards and committees including the Chairman of the Board of Evangelism and Home Missions, World Missions Board, Peniel Residential Drug and Rehabilitation Board (Johnstown, PA), Board of Directors East Coast Bible College (Charlotte, NC), Chairman of the Board of the Northwest Bible College (Minot, ND) and Chairman of the Board for the Home for Children (Concord, NC), and he was elected by his peers to serve four, two-year terms on the International Executive Council. Inducted into Hall of the Prophets at the Pentecostal Theological Seminary in 2007, a fully funded endowment scholarship for ministerial students was established in his honor.

Upon retiring and moving to Deland, Florida in 2013, he served at the City Sanctuary in various capacities. With a servant’s heart, he could be found cutting grass, emptying the trash, or visiting the hospitals. In 2015 he and Kathy served as the Senior Adults Pastors through 2021, and in 2018 he began teaching and growing the adult Sunday school class where he taught faithfully each week up until entering into the hospital in October. Both friends and family will remember the sound of his bellowing voice as he passionately prayed for those he loved, calling their names out loud. All were confident those prayers were heard and answered.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Kathleen (Huckelbridge) Sanders of Deland, Florida and their three daughters and their families: Delta Schrade (Mark) of Deland, FL, Ginger Robinson of Cleveland, TN, and Tonya Barbee (Aaron) of Cumming, GA. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Gabriel Schrade (Halah), Josiah Schrade, Madray Robinson, Mallory Robinson, Breckin Barbee, and Brock Barbee. He also leaves behind two brothers: Terry Sanders and Danny Sanders (Christina) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Jeremy B. Robinson; and three siblings: Verlis Sanders, Edwin Sanders, and Faye Humphrey.

She was born to Louis and Vera Bailey on a dairy farm in Artesia, California on July 24, 1927. The family moved to the Big Sky state of Montana in 1932 during the Great Depression.

She returned to California at the age of thirteen with her mother and five sisters. They immediately attended a Pentecostal church where she gave her heart to the Lord. The church became her whole life for a while.

She met and fell in love with a handsome sailor and was married at the age of fifteen to Jim Henry Evans, Jr. His home port was in San Francisco, so that is where she went to live. Fourteen months later, her only biological child, James Louis Evans, was born.

Frances’ husband was discharged from the Navy in 1945 and they went to live with him in his home town of Homer, Louisiana. He was in a car accident on January 6, 1946 and died 12 hours later. Frances returned to California for a brief period of time and then went to Portland, Oregon to care for her oldest sister, Lillian who had polio.

She became acquainted with the Church of God and soon became very involved with the work of God. She received a definite call to become a missionary, which was consistent with a vision of her childhood. God made it possible for her to attend Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee. Before her graduation she was appointed to the mission field of Costa Rica.

After many difficulties in obtaining visas, she and her son Jim, along with a co-worker, Mabel Mullins, started their journey. They spent five months in Belize, British Honduras in 1953. From there they went to the Honduran island of Utila for six weeks, and then on to the nearby island of Roatan in 1954, where Frances established churches at the villages of Six Hut, French Harbour, Jonesville, and Helene.

She pastored French Caye and French Harbour for 20 years and continued to pastor the French Caye Church for a total of 50 years!

Frances married Seth Arch on March 30, 1961. She is the biological mother of James Evans who is married to Karen. She has three adopted daughters: Marie Hall, Norma Austin who is married to Ramon, Netty Wagner, and two stepsons: Richard and Leonardo Arch. She has eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Frances loved the Bay Islands of Honduras and the people who live there. The people she served for more than 50 years are her family: brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, and grandchildren.

She has had times of great joy and great sorrow. The greatest joy of all will be when she meets many of you on the other side.

This church is co-pastored by Dr. Tonya Hawthorne and Reverend Linda Brown, facilitating a church mainly made up of widows and children. Good Shepherd Fellowship aims to “disciple, train, and equip Masai for ministry,” according to their mission statement.

“Rev. Brown and [Dr. Hawthorne] along with New Frontiers Health Force were part of the 365 sponsoring a student in one of the seminaries. As missionaries, we believe that we must be part of the global efforts to see the kingdom come. As pastors here in Kenya, we believed that our small village church could do something extraordinary for them. We brought the vision back to our church and began to speak about how our investment could touch others around the globe. How we need to be partners in the explosion of faith,” said Dr. Hawthorne.

This church worked hard to provide a welcoming environment to those widows struggling and anyone in need. Now they have raised money for the 365 Challenge in an effort to help serve those around them by sharing the gospel.

“Good Shepherd Fellowship Church raised the equivalent of $75, which may seem insignificant to us but to them that is thousands of dollars,” said Dr. Hawthorne.

Charles “Chuck” David King, 88, dedicated husband, loving father, grandfather, and friend to so many, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 30, 2023 and now rests in the arms of Jesus.

Chuck (the name most people knew him by), was married to Lois “Yvonne” King, for 67 years. He graduated from Escanaba High School in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and joined the Air Force in 1954. After marrying in 1956, it wasn’t long before Chuck got “Saved to the bone,” and his family would never be the same.

Chuck never met a stranger, and every person he encountered became a close friend, a colleague, or someone he could pray for. He loved to pray for people and saw many miracles during his ministry. He was a prayer warrior. Above all else he loved the Lord and His Word. He pastored for over 50 years (mostly in Michigan) and did missions work all over the world.

He loved his children and grandchildren and involved himself in their lives whenever possible. He was either ice skating, going to ball games, playing basketball, listening to their musical abilities, bowling with them, or attending their graduations.

Chuck left a godly legacy for all of us! His favorite song was, “Something Got Ahold of Me.” Well, God did, and He never let go!

Dr. Daniel James Vassell, Sr. https://www.cogwm.org/dr-daniel-james-vassell-sr/ Fri, 25 Nov 2022 20:34:14 +0000 https://www.cogwm.org/?p=15215 Read More]]> Daniel Vassell was many things, such as a husband, father, grandfather, and Reverend, but one thing was certain: he was a visible representation of joy. You could always feel his presence in the way he lit up a room and welcomed all who graced him because his laughter would radiate contagiously throughout the air. Whether he knew you for twenty years or had just met you, you were immediately his friend. Some of his favorite things in the world were his family, traveling, ministering, and his impressively large vegetable garden full of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, spinach, and more.

With regard to his life, Daniel Vassell was born December 20, 1957, in Jamaica to David and Louise Vassell. His late father was a minister, and Daniel was converted at an early age with a strong desire to serve God.

He began his college career in the world of fashion design, later teaching fashion design in a high school. However, in 1976, God called him into the ministry. He served his home church as the youth pastor. He then started studying and received his exhorter license in 1982, his ordained minister license in 1984, and his ordained bishop license in 1988. Dr. Vassell then furthered his education by earning his Bachelor of Education (B.A.) in 1994 at Tyndale University in Ontario, Canada and his M.A. and D.Min. degrees in Christian Counseling from the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (PTS) in 2004 and 2010, respectively.

Dr. Vassell served the Church of God as the director of Youth and Christian Education, as a district youth director, and then as a senior pastor. Furthermore, the Church of God called him to serve in the International Offices in the following capacities:

  • Director of State Youth and Christian Education
  • Director of International Youth and Discipleship
  • Coordinator of Cross-Cultural Youth and Singles Ministry
  • Director of State Evangelism and Home Missions
  • Member of the Council of Eighteen
  • Representative for World Missions
  • Administrative Bishop of Ontario, Canada
  • Dean of Mobilize for the Division of Education

Dr. Vassell always poured himself into any ministry he was called to do. His latest ministry as the Dean of Mobilize in the Division of Education was no different. He took the Lay Leadership Development program (LLD) and upgraded it. Then, he developed three other phases—Lay Leader, Lay Worker, and Lay Minister to the original LLD program. This is a training ministry for laity of the Church of God, which helps the pastor in local church ministry. The Mobilize program has flourished under his leadership where he has worked diligently since August of 2016. He will be greatly missed in the Division of Education.

Dr. Vassell was also noted for his marriage and family counseling seminars which he and his wife, Jenny, conducted in the Caribbean Islands, Canada, Africa, Europe, and the USA. Books which he authored and used in these seminars were: The Love Factor in Marriage (for couples), The Love Factor in Marriage: Truths to Explore Before Saying, “I Do,” Living the Blessing-Filled Life—NOW, and The EPIC Marriage: The Spirit-Empowered Living. He also filmed several videos in the studios of the Division of Education on marriage and counseling.

Dr. Daniel Vassell and Jenny Vernon Vassell were married in Toronto, Canada in 1983 and served together in joy, life, and ministry for the entire 39 years of their marriage. Through thick and thin, they loved each other deeply and traveled the world together. They made their home in Cleveland, Tennessee. They have two children: A daughter, Aleah who is married to Mason, and a son, James who is married to Angela. Daniel found great pride in his children and would spend much time listening to their adventures, goals, and dreams while imparting wisdom along the way.

James and Angela have two granddaughters, Amari and Ariah, who were Daniel’s treasures. Sometimes he would quietly steal away on his work lunch break for a chance to see them. From his beautiful bride, to his children, to his grandchildren, to his brothers, sisters, and mother, Daniel’s family had been the love of his life and his first and most important ministry. He is survived by twelve siblings; Peter Vassell, Samuel Vassell, Phillip Vassell, Timothy Vassell, Solomon Vassell, Paul Vassel, Pamela Vassell, Salomie Johnson, Patricia Slater, Hannah Frazier, Dorcas Vassell, and Rhoda Dyer. Sixty-two nieces and nephews also survive. He will be greatly missed by all.

He retired from active ministry, though would preach anytime he was given the opportunity, in December 2000 as pastor of the Scottsboro Church of God. He was an excellent preacher who combined both wit and wisdom to communicate the Gospel to many.

He enjoyed watching old westerns, playing a good game of golf, and slaughtering his family at mini-golf. The man could putt. We must be strategic and prayerful to accomplish our purpose.

World Missions has initiated Community Missions to serve as a vehicle for churches, pastors, and laity to be unified in the task of completing the Great Commission. Community Missions will be comprehensive to reach the last, the least, and the lost of humanity. It will be practical as it focuses on three key elements. First, the physical needs such as medical care, nutritious food, and clean water. Second, the material needs such as shelter, clothing, and shoes. Third, the spiritual needs of salvation, discipleship, and church planting.

Grady Murphy, Community Missions Coordinator, has been a faithful and valued member of our World Missions team for years. We are excited to see him serve the Kingdom in this new role as Coordinator. Will you take the 365 Challenge and connect with Community Missions? Let’s change the world…one day at a time.

It has been said that if the word of God is to reach humanity, it can only be done through the involvement of all of God’s people. A church is responsible for its community, nation, and world.

Romania Celebrates 100th Anniversary https://www.cogwm.org/romania-celebrates-100th-anniversary/ Sat, 10 Sep 2022 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.cogwm.org/?p=13925 Read More]]> General Director of Church of God World Missions, M. Thomas Propes, along with Assistant Director, John D. Childers, celebrate with the Church of God Pentecostal Church in Romania on the achievement of their 100th Anniversary. This celebration marks the triumphant persistence of a movement that has overcome decades of government oppression and persecution to share the Gospel over the past century.

The three-day event was led by Romania Overseer Moise Ardelean, who leads more than 3,400 churches in the Eastern European Nation, and World Missions Field Director Stephen Darnell.

“Church of God World Missions congratulates the Church of God Pentecostal Church in Romania for this monumental achievement and wish them many more years of fruitful ministry,” stated Dr. Propes.

The Romanian Church has played a pivotal role this year in assisting refugees from its war-torn neighbor Ukraine, partnering with the International Church of God offices and World Missions team to provide emergency aid since the Russian invasion began in February.

This weekend’s assembly stands as a testament to the Romanian church’s ability to thrive in difficult times while presenting the hope of Christ to a region that has suffered through decades of economic, political, and social turmoil.

Griffis and Assistant Director Dr. M. Thomas Propes express their deepest sorrow at the passing of Joseph Kagarama, Regional Superintendent of Eastern Africa.

Since 1988, Joseph served as overseer of Uganda and the Sudan, before becoming the regional superintendent of Eastern Africa in 2008. He pioneered the work of the Church of God in Southern Sudan (established 40-plus churches), often at the risk of his life. He led over 400 Muslim prisoners of war in Yei to the Lord. Today we have a strong and vibrant church, many of whom are in the refugee camp in North Uganda. A quiet man who prayed up to five hours a day, he provided strong and wise leadership for his region.

Field Director Peter Thomas states: “The loss cannot be put into words. He had suffered cancer for almost two years. The sadness in our hearts is great, but we are comforted knowing that he finished his race. Joseph believed and preached Christ Jesus ever since he came to the Lord! He was a mighty frontline warrior. Joseph’s integrity and honesty marked his life along with his selfless service…a true revivalist!”

General Director of World Missions, David M. Griffis stated,

“One of my greatest honors serving in World Missions was the opportunity to meet, and spend time with a true giant of the faith in Bishop Joseph Kagarama. With his undying compassion for souls, Brother Kagarama represented the very best in our World Missions family.”

Joseph spoke his heart when he once said, “We can stand together, doing much more for Christ, and bring in the last day harvest!”

World Missions Director Dr. David M. Griffis and Assistant Director Dr. M. Thomas Propes extend their condolences to the family in their loss.

Robert served as overseer of the Gilbert Islands (1968-1972), Western Guatemala (1972-1974), Central Guatemala (1974-1978), the Philippines (1978-1980), Kiribati and the South Pacific (1982-1985). During his tenure in the Gilbert Islands, a Bible school was started. He received his call to missions under the ministry of former World Missions West Indies Superintendent and Missions Representative A.W. Brummett. Robert also pastored Carver Road Church of God in Modesto, California; Long Beach Church of God in Long Beach, California; and the Cornerstone Church of God in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1976, Robert penned these words … “If I had the opportunity to speak personally to the members of the Church of God in the United States, this is what I would tell them: ‘Without the prayers and sacrifices of the Church of God members in America, there would be no foreign missionaries, no Bible schools to train workers to carry the gospel, and no missions schools to teach young and active minds. It is because of the gifts and prayers of you that these dreams and visions become realities throughout the world!’”

That statement still holds true today.

World Missions Director Dr. David Griffis and Assistant Director M. Thomas Propes extend their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family in their great loss.

World Missions Director Dr. David Griffis says: “C.L. Leonard was an outstanding servant of the Lord and a great World Missions Representative. His effective ministry of raising funds for World Missions impacted the world for Christ.”

Having received his call to missions work at the young age of 14, Brother Leonard served as World Missions field representative from 1980 until 2004 when he then served as associate representative until 2006. A man of impeccable character, he was meticulous in performing his responsibilities in missions education and fund-raising. At one point, C.L. raised over $22,223,048!

Other accomplishments include serving as State Youth Director and Evangelist in Louisiana, and pastor of various churches in North Carolina, as well as serving on the State Council and State Education Board there.

C.L. had many stories about his life and childhood. His father was a construction worker and if the weather was bad, he couldn’t work; hence, no pay. Once it was so inadequate that his father took a crowbar and pried apart the fireplace to retrieve a dime … only there was no dime. From that time on, C.L. fretted over provision, but the Lord spoke to him: Have I not said, I will never leave you nor forsake you?” That was all the peace C.L. needed and established his fervor for supporting the missions cause.

Revelation 2:19 … I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.”

December 6, 2021

Former missionary overseer to Malawi, Africa, David LePage passed away on December 6, 2021. David also served as project coordinator of North Central Africa, regional superintendent of Eastern Africa and Western Africa, and national missionary evangelist of Africa:C/E/W before his retirement to the island of Guernsey (located in the English Channel) in 2010.

World Missions Director Dr. David M. Griffis and Assistant Director Dr. M. Thomas Propes offer their sincere condolences to the family. Dr. Griffis states:

David received his call to missions in Africa at the young age of 16. While spending time in prayer, he heard the Lord say to him, “I want you in My work.” David then asked where and the Lord responded, “Africa.” He was a graduate of the Elim Pentecostal Bible College, London, England, and an ordained minister of the Church of God. His father was a Methodist lay preacher, but his parents were members of the Elim Pentecostal Church (of Great Britain) for over 55 years.

In one of their newsletters, David stated: “God’s work is not always easy; He never promised it would be. God did, however, tell us He would be there for us always and thus we have proved Him these many years.”

Field Director of Africa, Peter and Debbie Thomas, had this to say: “David was a giant, a gentle one who served the Lord in humility and total surrender. He invested his life into the ministry and life of others—a passionate evangelist, church planter, outstanding Missionary, and a true Kingdom person. The Church in Africa will remember him and his dear wife, Jean, for the love they had for the continent. Surely, we lost a true friend and brother, a servant of the Lord. In the Spirit, we can see David rejoicing in the presence of the One he loved so dearly … Jesus … the One whom he preached with passion and endurance.”
