When I was in high school, because of some issues going on in the family, I spent about 6 months in a town in NC. We were looking for a church. Someone said in the COG denomination, in a lot of places, there was a more reserved church in town, and a more country church out of town. It turned out to be true of that town. The city pastor seemed reserved, maybe a little more educated. And the church out of town had livelier music. The music was a little countrier outside of town. The hairstyles might have been a little bigger. We ended up going out of town. The one in the city was kind of small. The pastor in town did kind of 'jerk' when he got excited.
When we moved to Georgia, we went to a large COG in town that you might not have been able to tell from a Baptist Church. It had grown suddenly full of people who might not have been from Pentecostal backgrounds.
Is this true of a lot of small towns in the southeast, that there is often a reserved COG in town and a livelier country one outside of town? Was it true in the '80's?
