Post Black Lives Matter Nature Boy Florida
Guys,

Would it surprise you to know I am sympathetic toward this movement?

Our African American brothers ARE getting the short end of the stick.
They are lashing out at the cops for some real, but often only perceived, discrimination, but in reality, it is much bigger than that.

The systemic racism built in to our society is real.
Racism of low expectations.
Racism of criminal expectations until proven innocent.

Sure - some guys can break out of it...but it is a lot more difficult.

Now, my solution would be - whatever we have done since the sixties - we must do the opposite. But the inherent racism of the system - mostly built in by Democrats - but approved by Republicans - is real.

As soon as we accept that, we can make some progress.

Post I wonder... Aaron Scott
I wonder how us white folks would feel if most cops were black, and we felt they were, at least a lot of the time, seemingly unfeeling, disrespectful, perhaps hostile, even brutal, and on too many occasions fired when many of us would have thought that a taser, if that, would have been a more appropriate response?

At the same time, I am reading "Caribbean" by James Michener. He speaks of how the islands had this type of "caste" system (for lack of a better term): whites, then mixed (the lighter, the better you were accepted in white society)...all the way to full black. The point that he seemed to make over and over was that white AND the "upper" blacks all seemingly conspired against the blacker citizens. Why? Well, the whites were typically at the top of the societal foodchain, but light-skinned whites were often allowed into positions that, while not as high as whites, was certainly well above those positions available to the darker blacks. This led to a number of race issues in the islands.

Howard Zinn, liberal historian, made a similar claim--that the rich had a "buffer" class between them and the poor: The middle class. And, the middle class, thinking they could one day perhaps get to be at the highest level, often joined in oppression of those beneath them. And if the middle class got antsy, they would "throw the dog a bone" and make a minimal adjustment as needed to get the middle class' support back.

I wonder if we don't see that a bit in the racial issues? Some blacks, highly successful and trying to enter the upper echelon, are not nearly so upset by what the police do. Of course, Kapernick and others, while they are rich, do not feel the need to identify with the upper class, but perhaps because of their skills feel they can afford to thumb their nose at the establishment.

Again, though, consider how we would feel if we were in a world where most cops were black...and had a reputation for not being fair to whites.

Im not sure but heres a thought. The reason these blacks dont get upset with the cops could be because when they see a thug with a gun or just a thug not obeying a cop when he is directing orders at them they might see force as an acceptable measure to insure the safety of the innocent.
