Why are Saturday men's meeting so early. |
Link |
I'm wondering why the schedule men's fellowship meetings for early in the morning. Around here, one is at 7 AM. I hardly get enough sleep. I don't think it's wise to get up that early on the Shabbat, at that, instead of getting some sleep on the one morning I can sleep in. Maybe the guys who schedule these things don't have to work late all the time and regularly get enough rest.
Does anyone know what is behind this tradition? _________________ Link |

the idea is to get you there early, feed you and minister to you and get you back home before the day is too far gone so you can do what you need to at home or with your family. The food usually gets you there and if you can't take one early saturday out of your busy schedule to fellowship with the other brothers and be encouraged in the Word, then I guess you can stay in bed and miss a good time. Your choice. |

NBF, that one is insightful As my brother in law would say, "Well I'll be dogged!"
If it is to keep from interfering with the Christian mans work day, for me it could be held late at night.
Now seriously, there are men who thrive on and take pride in, arising early, it is natural for them. There are those of us who are up until 1-3AM and prefer to sleep in. I am not a MORNING person, and many folk are not. The morning folk I know personally, are in bed at 9-10PM every night.
C6th said it right, They don't want him there and he accommodates them.

I think NBF was exhibiting his snarky side as I was perhaps a bit harsh in my comments towards the OP. But....truth is still truth - in love, I know. |

I'm pretty sure Cojak recognized the snark. Really, for all his tactfulness, he can appreciate a fine piece of snark. |

False dichotomy.
Staying in bed is a good time.
I hear a lot of talk on Acts about good health, physically and mentally, but very little about the connection that proper rest plays in physical and mental good health.
Another thing is that people vary in their sleep requirements. You've probably heard the saying about drivers--anyone who drives slower than me is an idiot and anyone who drives faster is a maniac. Same thing for sleeping--anyone who requires more sleep than me is lazy, anyone who requires less is a maniac. |

In defense of my snark |

I submit that I have and many of my friends have managed to get up early Saturday morning in order to make a 7:30 or 8 am tee time. Just sayin...
It's all about priorities isn't it? |

Link doesn't strike me as someone who is trying to get out of keeping spiritual things a high priority. From what I get from his posts, he is very busy with job, ministry, and a young family.
If I had to guess, he would take sleeping in over golf any Saturday. |

Would you happen to be responsible for setting the time for your local men's meeting at 7 AM or earlier? I'm also curious. Do you happen to get a good 7 or 8 hours of sleep a nigh all throughout the week?
I don't think it is unspiritual to rest on the Sabbath.

Thanks, Bonnie, for your kind comments. This reminds me of another good reason to not leave the bed at 7 AM in the morning.
Yeah, rest...... that's the reason...... Our bodies need rest. Yeah, that's it.
I don't play golf, btw. _________________ Link |

I think the Sabbath |
brotherjames |
Is Sunday and you get up.early to honor the Lord on that day. Our men's meetings have been moved to Monday evening as have our ladies meeting that meet simultaneously. Works for us. |

I always think the high energy level people who require little sleep are like the Levite who said to his concubine, "Up, and let us be going," oblivious to the fact that she lay dead on the threshold. |

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Well Bonnie hast thou not read, hast though not heard |
brotherjames |
The admonition, yea the warning, from the wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, who reproved slothfulness and then tells us this in Proverbs 6:9-11:
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Yep, our pastor said he used that verse on his teenage boys. I think he liked the word sluggard. |
