Your Opinion: The most misused Scriptures |
John Stevenson |
I'm writing a new Bible Study series about the most commonly misused Bible scriptures. Any suggestions? _________________ www.bwcuhrichsville.org |

1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able ; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
People frequently say, "God won't put more on you than you can bear," but this scripture is actually talking about temptation. _________________ "More of Him...less of me."

1 Cor 2:7-9 No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 8 But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. 9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him." NLT
Vs 9 is one of the most misquoted Scriptures. |

Rom 4:17 (as it is written, "A father of many nations have I made you") in the sight of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. NASB
WOF teaches that we can call things that are not as though they are.
God was the one who called into being, not Abraham. |

The scriptural phrase, "Touch not mine anointed" has been typically used by preachers (especially by TV preachers and by those who support them) to eliminate any criticism of their doctrine and to intimidate any who would critique their doctrines or their ministry practices. When used in this way, this phrase, while itself scriptural, is torn from its context and misapplied in a completely self-serving manner.
In context, the phrase refers to ALL of God's people. |

I always took it to mean that David refused to take Saul's life because it was God who had placed him in the position of king. Interesting thought though. _________________ www.bwcuhrichsville.org |

I am finding that most scriptures are taken out of context because people don't read the scripture before and following the selected scripture. Also many people don't ask the who, what, where, when and why. _________________ www.bwcuhrichsville.org |

Psalm 105:9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;
10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:
11 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:
12 When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.
13 When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;
14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;
15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
1 Chron 16:15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;
19 When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.
20 And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
21 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. |

In 1 Sam 26 David did say he would not physically harm King Saul. He did not give the meaning to the concept that many modern preachers try to give, that to criticize them in any way is to "touch" God's anointed.
1 Sam. 26:10 David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish. 11 The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD'S anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go. |

This Scripture was first used in reference to Jacob and his immediate family when they were in Canaan before they went down to Egypt. The "anointed" and the "prophets" were Jacob and his family. _________________ Randy Johnson, Pastor

Romans 4:17 |
Mark Hardgrove |
Romans 4:17
(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
This verse specifically says that "God" calls those thing which be not as though they are. Somehow the WOF people use this verse to say that we are to call those things that are not as though they are and then they live in a perpetual state of denial calling it faith. _________________ Mark E. How about 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.'
The passage is written to a church, but many preachers use it to say that you get saved by 'asking Jesus into your heart.' _________________ Link |
