Theologians, step in....our specific bible.....why those books?

I believe the Word but I have a few questions. What metric did men use to include the books we have? Paul wrote more books but they are not included. How did men of old choose which ones are inspired?

I believe they were led by the Holy Spirit.

I believe the canon is correct.

Iâ€™ve been reading a lot of church history lately. Basically the canon was based on the manuscripts that the early church had already decided to be the authoritative.
At least thatâ€™s what the the authors Iâ€™ve read have said.

Michael J. Kruger has a couple of excellent books on this topic. He explores the topic in general in The Question of Canon and then in part 1 of Canon Revisited he explores the two main understandings of how the canon was established (community determination and historical determination) and offers a third, the canon as self-authenticating, which is basically an epistemological approach to sheepdog's answer. In part 2 he explores and justifies the self-authentication model in depth. A very, very good read on this topic IMO.
