Post Charles Stanley, Pentecostal? JLarry
For years I have heard that Dr. Charles Stanley grew up Pentecostal. This morning I actually heard him say he had been Pentecostal until he went to Bible School.

So my question to OTCP is, if I go to Bible School and get an earned Dr. will I become a Baptist?

Or to put it another way, when I grow up will I become a Baptist.

Note:
This is not to slam Baptist. I love the Baptist. They have some good basis Doctrine.

They have probably won more to Christ than most.

I don't know Charles Stanley. But, hypothetically, if you decided that speaking in tongues was not the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit many years ago, you probably had to move on to a different denomination. Again, I have no clue as to his thinking. Acts-pert Poster

I have heard Charles Stanley on his TV show speak very disparagingly about the experience referred to by Pentecostals as "the baptism in the Holy Spirit." He completely denies the validity of the Pentecostal understanding of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, not just the initial evidence doctrine but the whole thing. Like most Baptists, he affirms that the baptism in the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion, and denies the very idea of a baptism in the Spirit subsequent to conversion as well as the idea that speaking in tongues accompanies it. Thank you Dr. JL for your very relevant query. Since you addressed it me personally, please allow the ole timer to elucidate on the matter.

1. Stanley grew up Pentecostal Holiness. When he felt the call to preach, a family offered to pay for his seminary training. He went to a Baptist seminary, embraced a Baptistic theology and has followed it ever since.

2. Stanley's ThD came from Luther Rice, 25 years before it became accredited, and long before the rigor of their program was enhanced to meet national accreditation standards. A personal inquiry to Luther Rice about 15 years ago regarding Stanley's docterate revealed that they didn't even have a copy of Stanley's dissertation. I was told by the registrar that his dissertation was a sermon series on the Psalms. A sermon series, my brethren, is not a ThD dissertation. It isn't even a DMin dissertation. So, you must decide if his docterate is real, i.e., based on given norms of docteral study.

3. No one goes to "Bible School" and earns a docterate, as Bible schools are most typically either 2-year or 4-year institutions. legitimate docterates are earned at universities and seminaries.

4. So now to the essence of Dr. JL's, question, "if I go to Bible School and get an earned Dr. will I become a Baptist?" The answer to this is ONLY IF YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A BAPTIST. Does earning a docterate at a secular or non-Pentecostal institution cause one to deviate from or deny their Pentecostal roots? Only if they allow it to do so. Here is a brief sampling of men/women who did this very thing (i.e., earned a legitimate docterate) and remained staunch in their Pentecostal beliefs:

Ray Hughes
Paul Conn
Steve Land
Rick Moore
Chris Thomas
Cheryl Johns
Jackie Johns
James Bowers
Joe Byrd

There are many many others who claim docterates, but I can't place them in this list because of milled credentials.

Years ago as I was losing my hearing I learned I could hear and understand Charles Stanley on TV. Most Sunday mornings my spiritual food came from his messages. I could not understand our pastor. I could hear him but the words were difficult to make out.
I came to the conclusion that it was the professional modulation of the sound on TV, not a BIG variance of volume, like you get live at a church service.
I could also understand the pastor of 'the Church on The Way'. (Age helps me lose names and lots of words now). Got it, Hayford.

But back to Charles, I was blessed by many or his messages.

I smile now when I hear preachers say, I cannot believe people stay home and watch a preacher on TV, because now I know there are honest reasons for it at times.

Smile But to the OP I have not heard one way or the other. The times I heard him I heard very little negative... Embarassed

I'm not real sure that this { grow up } will ever happen Larry. Therefore the question cannot be answered with any accuracy. Cool

no - you won't.
iE didn't make him quit. Speaking in tongues did.
Luther Rice believed it was of the devil. Glad when they moved out of JaCKSONVILLE.

Stanley is the product of his teaching and training. I think God has used him to bless and touch many lives. Furthering your education doesn't necessitate a divorce from your theological roots. But sometimes a greater understanding will do exactly that. I'm not on board with Stanley on cessationist doctrine or Unconditional Eternal Security but I will concede that sometimes you have to be willing to let things go as your understanding grows. Post OTCP...consider Aaron Scott
consider that Bro. Stanley probably attended at a time when accreditation was not the end all, be all, everything except God, total package, sine qua non that some deem it to be today (SMILE). Accreditation didn't even really take off in America until after the Korean War, I don't think--and really because someone saw a way to make money (at least that's my story). Hon. Send me a sermon series on Psalms, Aaron, and I'll send you a beautiful ThD diploma.
