I was not prepared for the pain, snake bite |

We have many trees around our home in NC. We are back for awhile and I asked the forest service if Ivy killed trees. The answer was NO, that their studies show that the weight of the vines can topple a tree in the wind.
So I set out to clean the trees. I found vines up to 4" in dia. After days and many trees, yellow jackets and bumble bee stings, I reached in to get a hand full of ivy and felt a sting. Thinking it was another yellow jacket I then saw movement that proved to be a 2' copperhead only an inch in diameter. I Killed it and within minutes my hand started to throb and swell. In about an hour at the emergency room the pain was probably the worst I have ever felt.
My survival training was 65 years ago: tourniquet, and keep the bite below the heart.
I was not shocked to learn that was OLD STUFF, now do not stop the flow and keep it above the heart if possible let the venom dilute.
Anyway I am okay, but I just wanted to tell everyone who , like me, does not know that there is PAIN with the copperhead! However the Dr said the copperhead is the least painful, you do not want a coral nor rattlesnake to take a bite.
After a couple days the swelling is going down and NO PAIN, thank the Lord. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

Another odd thing, the hospital is required to call Poison controll and they take over the monitoring. They required me to sit with arm elevated as they monitored the swelling and called every hour to report. They require 6 hours of monitor before they prescribe the anti-venom. My swelling only went part way up my arm and slowed down and they did not use the anti venom.
BUT the NC Poison Control made all the decisions, I was surprised at that.
But as I said, I'm fine now. God is good. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

Oh yeah, I am a fan of Westerns. They always poured whiskey on the bites. NOW the poison control says ONLY soap and water, NO ALCOHOL on the bite. That is just for you that wander in the woods. LOL _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

Thanks for letting us know not to use a tourniquet or to lift our hand above our heart!
And thank the Lord you are OK. |

I have already been told I need to change churches where PRACTICE will make perfect (sometimes). _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!
