How would they be received at our camp meetings of today?

They'd probably be derided as hateful, bitter legalists.

Post Well, let's see.... Aaron Scott
The first Florida Campmeeting where I actually stayed inside the whole time (as opposed to making numerous trips around the tabernacle, hearing the sermons, but tending to be waiting to strike the snow cone stand at the most opportune time), was in, I believe, 1979 (I think). Ronald Brock preached.

I would imagine that any Camp Meeting today would be overjoyed to have had a Ronald Brock in his prime!

I can't remember the all of them or the order very well anymore, but after him, there was C.R. Spain, Lamar Vest, Paul L. Walker, on and on. All of them would have brought the house down in most Camp Meetings today.

HOWEVER, the best Campmeeting I have HEARD of (I was there, but was only 9 years old or so) was the 1972 Florida Campmeeting with Paul Henson. Both my dad AND Paul Henson said that it was something special.

In 1990, I went to the WNC one (Dennis McGuire was the overseer). T.L. Lowery preached a wonderful campmeeting that touched me in the most wonderful way...and at the most needed time, I believe.

I could go on. So, yeah, those old-timers would have laid it down. And I don't think they would have been perceived at all as harsh.

In 1959 Paul Henson had preached for CH Matthews in Biloxi. I think he was the Miss youth Director. In front of Fred Brennen and our trailers, I saw the man work a hulla hoop. I knew then this was my kind of preacher! LOL

BUT YES even at a young age the man could PREACH, and I think he would fit today! (Where there are real camp meetings.) Henson A special man! Smile

Post Have Any of You Ever Heard Of FG Minister
Kevin Wallace. He's an old-time, Church of God preacher from the 1950's. But he pastors in 2017. Some people evidently still like that style. Acts-celerater

I think Ray Hughes style and content would still be well received in most any Pentecostal church/convention.

I hear that Kevin's wife can out preach him however with the way she dresses she would get kicked off the old time camp meeting circuit.

Kevin himself said on stage with his wife that she could out preach him and that was the opinion of many in the church. The way she was dressed she would not have been acceptable in an old fashion camp meeting. Cool

In the first place, the OP is about how preachers back then would be received today, NOT how preachers today would be received back then.
Are you trying to get things backwards on purpose?

In the second place, you should listen to NBF. He speaks Acts-Cathedra. [Insert Acts Pun Here]

In fairness, Mr Page has not shown any propensity for reading - so maybe it was an "honest" mistake.

Like ole Sheriff Taylor told Ernest T. Bass, "You're not 'no account,' you're just ignorant."?

Post Quiet Wyatt
About 10 years ago, I had the pleasure of pastoring an especially cranky old lady. She took every opportunity to mention how that when she got saved she promised God she would never again wear pants or makeup, and would never cut her hair again, and she always mentioned how she was basically the only one she knew who still held to 'holiness standards' of living. This lady was a true relic of the old-time CoG in the Deep South especially. (She also took every opportunity to mention how she believed ni**ers (she used that word quite freely) and Mexicans were basically the reason for so many of our problems today. I am sure that if her kind of outlook is indicative of how things were in the 1950s and 1960s in the CoG, not only would Mrs. Wallace not be preaching in the CoG back then if she did not dress the part, she and her husband would have been positively booted out of the CoG altogether back then if she wore pants, cut her hair, or wore makeup. That's just how it was in the CoG up until the 1970s and to some extent, even into the 1980s. The old-timey lady I pastored was saved in the CoG in the early 1950s, and the church she was a part of all those years still had a clerk who confronted the pastor who preceded me about the no pants, no makeup, etc. stuff when he pulled up with the UHaul as the new pastor. Kinda glad it was him and not me.

If the word is preached and not "pet" subjects (hair, pants, make-up, etc.) it should be received regardless.

going back 40 years, most of what I remember was walking around and around and around the tabernacle though so I am not a good person to ask.

I have some of those on tape though and I don't recall any of that being on them C. R. Spain, T. L. Lowery and Ray H. Hughes...

Bonnie - You really crack me up sometimes! Laughing Laughing Laughing

My dad had a reel to reel tape recorder back in the day & he used it to record music and sermons and such. I heard my parents talk for years about a sermon preached at a local campmeeting (Snowd Branch, ENC) in 1961 called "Holiness - External, Internal, and Eternal" by Roy Burroughs. The tape was transferred to a cassette at some point, and I heard it as an adult. I fully expected it to be a lot of clothesline preaching, but honestly, it wasn't. It was one of the best sermons I've ever heard about holiness. Sure wish I still had a copy.

I think preaching like that (and much of its day) would still be accepted today, though I guess it would depend upon who they were preaching to.

I listen to all styles. I really like the old COG preaching , not necessarily the hair and pants type though.
