To expand on RS's suggestions, I like "Our Heavenly Harbor". Then maybe, 'Fishing Family of the Main Stream' but then I do like :
Church of God, West Gastonia
Church of God, Charlotte 1.
Church of God, Whiskey River, etc
Of course I would have really liked that when I searched the Phone book for a church while traveling. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

All the names mentioned sounds better than "J Larry's Chapel". My mother and dad got saved at "Barns Chapel". Barns gave the property for the church.
My dad, brother and I preached at Barns Chapel. _________________ Recorded Sermons @ www.pastorwiley.com

Fad names |
MI6 |
it appears that One Word Church Names are now the trend...
Example - Elevation, Gateway
But I am sure that there will be a Church-Mart, Church-Co or
Church-Express one day soon. |

New millenial churches although we have more millenials than most of them do, but try these names
C3 (central carolina church) C4, Journey Church, Northe Ridge, Westover Church, The Gathering, World Outreach Centre, Bridge of Hope to name just a few of the more eclectic ones.
Here is a bitingly sarcastic look at millenial church hunters. Watch them both. Actually a very accurate look at the phenomenon.

Forgot Destiny, but my personal fave is a black church in Greensboro called The Pentecostals. Now that's putting it out there isn't it?

I enjoy John Crist's sense of humor, but what made me laugh out loud was the comment from someone who said, "I'm Lutheran. My arms never get tired in church."

The Church at Springdale Commons.
Sounds like a shopping center. _________________ "It is doubtful if any Trinitarian Pentecostals have ever professed to believe in three gods, and Oneness Pentecostals should not claim that they do." - Daniel Segraves UPCI |

Take a look at the attendance in these "fad name" churches and then make fun of their names.... |

They know marketing inside and out. They know their audience, they have targeted their demographics and are delivering a product their customers want to hear. That is a sure fire way to build a brand and gather a crowd. As to whether God is altogether pleased, only He can judge.
Willow Creek in Chicago was the originator of the seeker sensitive marketing movement. They were very successful by all metrics and yet in 2005 Bill Hybels wrote a book summarizing the findings of a survey they had done. The title of the book was interestingly, "We Were Wrong". They discovered they had made customers and not disciples. Their customers had about an inch deep of God and were a mile wide. In other words very shallow and very unable to be the fully committed followers of Christ Hybels had professed them to be.
I have no problem with hip names, Starbucks in the lobby, using the Message Bible and being relevancy to the culture and being unoffending as long as God isn't offended. This is no excuse for not growing by the way. My church isn't huge but we aren't small and we are growing. I wouldn't mind changing our name either. First Assembly is not really a great idea but it's about what us going on inside the name snd we are doing well thanks. |

Now a lot of COG are going to "small group" meetings and one service on Sunday. No Sunday School. Small groups are in members homes or restaurants or an outside activity (games, shopping or tours are considered small groups.) I know one church that listed a clean up crew as a small group. No need to pray and fast for services like that. Just show up Sunday morning and go for a praise team doing "its" performance, pastor preach a 30 minute or less service - maybe an altar call - collect T& Offering; go home. With all the problems, temptations and struggles that people face daily, we need more church - not less. Names of churches are changing as was mentioned. COG logo is not visible anywhere. Church fads are like fashion - they come and go but look the damage done in the long run. Are souls being born again and changing their life? Are people drawing closer to God? Very sad situation!!! |

We have always tried newer methods. Some worked some did not. We have a lot of dedicated folk who are TRYING their best to win the lost. They may try a method that will not work for you, but hopefully it will work for them, or they will make another reach.
My dad was a SS promoter. He gave away bicycles, a horse, and a car among other things. He was laughed at by many preachers, but in the end he always left a church out of debt, and at the least 50% more in worship. Once he left one 100% increase.
With every pastor preference ballot he received 100%. Once when he gave away the horse, the attendance was 850 normal attendance was 150. After the big day the increase was to 200 avg. My daddy was a pioneer Bible preacher. His message was over all about the Love of His Jesus!
So I see what some are attempting to do, I applaud the ones who are winning souls. What ever we do, we must always keep in mind, this is for the Kingdom! _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

THE LOVE OF GOD |
I am all for being trying something new even as your father did. We have had give-a-ways and promotions and they do work. It brings people to the church to hear the gospel. He that winneth souls is wise. God always sent us to troubled churches - usually the ones in financial debt that only GOD could bring them out and He did.
Repentance has to take place and definitely a change in their way of living. I love a move of God. If we lift Him up, He will draw all men unto Him. Your father sounds like a great man of God. He had a true love for God, family and people.
