Planting Church Bank: Who Is Going West? |
Lonestar |
I would love to see church planting efforts take place west of the Mississippi. However, after seeing a social media post yesterday of a couple going before the committee attempting to win cash for their church plant in Alabama, I don't believe we will ever see a trailblazer in the COG planting churches in the West. |

Actually, 2 out of the first 7, are in Texas!
Chris Binion in Rockwall
Aubrey Robertson in Hudson Oaks
We also have a new church plant launching in Corpus Christi under the umbrella of Eli Bonilla and Abundant Life - San Antonio. Gabriel Colmanero is the man there.
Very humble beginnings after a couple of decades of only planting two churches in our state that were true plants and still thriving: Mark Crawford at Frisco and Don Lott's Outdoorsmen Church in Midlothian. They are both doing a great work!
Our new GO really cares about church planting! So do guys like Travis Johnson that have championed this stuff for awhile. I am very humbled to be a friend to Aubrey and am excited about what God and the COG are doing there. We need more but this is a start! _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8 |

Rockwall should have had a church years ago. |

AJ troller is one of the seven church planters who were initially funded. He is planting in Washington state. Almost half of the church plants are being planted west of the Mississippi.
Madison, Alabama is a town that is absolutely exploding. The opportunity is right. The leader is right. Half of the battle is getting the right person in the right place at the right time. That's what's happening there for sure. Church planting is incredibly hard stuff. I think if anybody has shot at making A great go of it, Michael and Janah Williams do.
Yesterday was a good day.
My prayer is that we would jump in behind Tim Hill and go after the Great Commission relentlessly. I think the more we invest in mission, the more God will trust us with the resources for more mission. |

With all due respect Texas isn't exactly the West as we westerners here on the left coast would proclaim.
Exciting to hear about the new church plants but to picture another new church planted in Alabama where we have hundreds & hundreds of churches already is not what I call visioneering. But who am I ...right?
I'm just a pastor in the central valley of California where my church is on a district where our entire 3 churches in 2 counties cover 2,941 sq. miles.
The 10 closest towns around me that are within 20 minutes or less of each other & they make up a population base of over 700,000 people ...talk about a great need.
Very excited about the state of Washington church planters & I hope they do exceptionally well.
May the day come before my days are over where we see the CoG make a concerted effort to send teams of church planters to California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada & Arizona.
May we be overwhelmed with dynamic talent & excited disciples who are more interested in a missional calling & less attracted in pleasing the leaders of their denomination.

Hey Dean,
If you know of any strong leaders that want to plant in California, send them to www.usamissions.com to make application. Nothing would make me happier than to see that! |

The key to developing a quality church plant is to have a strong leader ...hard to come by but I'll have my ears open.
I'm praying God will send us a flood of capable people who will plant churches west of the Rocky Mountains ...in God's favorite part of America _________________ "Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!"

. | Lol at anyone saying Texas isn't "the West".
OP posed the question "West of the Mississippi..." Texas qualifies across the board.
State pride aside- I'm with you Dean. We need to plant churches in AZ, CA, CO, ID, KS, MT, ND, NE, NV, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, and WY. Let's include AL and HI. _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8 |

an interesting subject is the westward movement into Tennessee. Why aren't there more churches in WT? Memphis is a great population center with a failed COG presence.
Why can't the COG go west? The AOG went east why can't the COG go west? _________________ Sanctification is subsequent to the new birth |

Sorry Dean.
There was no need to be negative nellie here.
Texas is not the southeastern United States.
On a day when the COG took a real step forward on church planting, Dean could only muster up a cold water splash on everything.
There was no need to rip Travis for not doing but one "real" western plant.
Perhaps if you leaders in California weren't so negative more could be done. It might be time to wag the finger at the man in the mirror for not doing enough instead of everyone else.
Bad form.

Well dude you appear to be the only one who took it wrong because I wasn't trying to be negative & I never read where Travis was the one doing the planting.
Perhaps if we had better mission minded intentions years ago we would look more balanced in our field work rather than looking like a predominant S/E denomination.
And as far as the good CoG folks here in California, we have been committed to the covenant with Cleveland all these years with rarely a request for any help & we have never failed to support this organization financially.
Our church has sponsored every YWEA project & missionaries for decades, we have sent countless leaders to many conferences & every GA. Our teens have attended & graduated CoG schools & universities & we support & attend the youth camps & Winterfest. If we call for anything in Cleveland it usually has to be by 1pm our time or else the next day. We can't just hop in the car & show our members the beauty of Lee U. or the huge churches with the CoG name on them. I could add tons more to this list but why?
You need to walk in another man's shoes before you take a swipe again.
Your mean spirited assessment of my concerns shows a dark side to your heart & rather than sending me a PM concerning what might be perceived as a negative tone, you go on the attack ...thanks for showing your true side.
If you were a pastor you might know how tough it can be to work with the system & you might be able to feel the disconnect we pastors feel sometimes.
FYI, Travis made a comment almost immediately which shows he has a vested interest in church plants out west ...as in the true west which is west of the Rocky's. _________________ "Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!"

5 of the nation's 11 fastest growing cities are in......
That's right, Texas.
Where 2 of our first 7 plants are going.
If we want to reach where the people are going and where we haven't, Texas is the most fertile ground West of the Mississippi and anywhere in the U.S.
We most definitely need to go to California and to Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and other Western States but the little shots at brothers and sisters in Texas for not being West enough sounds small and bitter. I am thankful for every church planter and for every place planted. The goal is or should be souls. I'm truthfully dumbfounded that "we've" found a way to be negative about this. Maybe we should spend some time asking the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and to create in us a clean mind and soul. I love you brothers and sisters. Maybe just something to consider. _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8 |

In fact 2 of those 5 cities are here in California & the other 3 are in Washington & Utah.)

I think you have taken my original remarks way too far to sound so insulted.
My point was not that Texas isn't in the west (it's west of the Mississippi River) but it is east of the Rocky Mountains. There is another 1/3 of this great nation west of the Rocky's.
For you to be so dumbfounded is preposterous!
You have taken the secular view of a snow flake who if their opinion is not matched it is grievous to the point of protest.
As a pastor & as a Christian I am thrilled at every chance a door may open for a church plant, but for you & others to be so insulated to insinuate offense is in itself sophomoric.
Before a gasket blows consider that my remarks are not intended for you to claim offense, indeed my remarks are biased that not enough church planting is being done ...period!!!
I was of the Actscelerate rebellion (as some claimed) in San Antonio, Tx. when at the GA a young pastor named Travis Johnson, (currently a Council of 18 member) challenged the chair. I heard the cry for church planting visionaries & transparent accountability. Our forefathers in this CoG may have been of the opinion that they were doing all things correct but certain things like preparing for future church planting was not on the agenda in my opinion. I come from those elders as I am not just 4th generation CoG but I am 4th generation pastor/evangelist/missionary/official CoG going back almost 100 years through my dad, grandpa, great grandpa, numerous uncles & cousins.
Now several years later & many needless battles in the community of Christ, we are starting to see a step forward, to that I am grateful. But don't judge my comments about Texas or church planting as though I'm being negative about any such good news. I am zealous to achieve even more ...way more & even to the point where I say way more west of Texas!! _________________ "Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!"

Allow me to simmer down any and al rhetoric. Texans are notorious for our state pride. The only other place that I have lived and visited that came close was the NYC area. They're pretty proud! Your original post made certain claims that I was playfully refuting. We're on the same side. This has been hashed and rehashed and I wasn't a bishop at the time but I was at the assembly you mentioned and think that you'd agree that the way "we" handled the reduction of ToT by cutting Home Missions effectively gave the COG a hysterechtomy(sp). We removed our own reproductive organs. The church planting bank is the first step to restoring life producing capability back to the COG. We most certainly have just begun and need to do more. Your field is California. Mine is Texas. Together we can and will achieve more. God bless you brother! Much love from my heart to yours! I do think that we should celebrate each win whether it's in your assignment, my assignment or in someone else's. It's His Church- not ours. I'm so thankful that He has called us to be a part of it. _________________ Proverbs 3:5-6; John 13:34-35; Acts 1:8 |

Amen Brandon ...Amen!!
The image of a barren CoG is sickening & the fact we used potential missions money to balance the budget is/was gross to say it best.
I am 100% behind any & all church plants but I am at the point where the older I get the more I worry about gold mines of opportunity like we have here in the west, including Texas being overlooked or placed on the back burner.
Now that we have some seeds planted with these new plants coming on board I can only hope for more & more opportunities.
I love your outlook!! _________________ "Empty nest syndrome is for the birds!"
