Post Word of Faith Fellowship, Spindale, NC Cojak
Anyone ever hear of it? Anyone know about it? My wife reads our hometown paper on the internet. It caught her eye since we pastored for a couple years five miles from Spindale. Spindale is a very small town.

There was a hint it was COG or a spin-off. Supposedly ran like Jim Jones ran his cult. Slapping the hell out of people. Beating the devil out of members. Performing marriages and demanding no sleeping together for a year. The article said folks from all over the world came to the church for relief of devils and demons, etc.

No numbers were given but this was an ' investigative report'. I was just curious if anyone reading had heard of it. I know the pastor of one of the Shelby churches posts here occasionally. Maybe he has some input. Thanks. Confused

I made the statement that I didn't think it could be over 50 people. I was wrong. There are hundreds who believe Sis Whaley is a prophet. I should have looked on the internet first.

Cojak, I think I had heard of it as being a cult before (but I could be mixing it up with another place). I don't know anything about it personally.
I just read this article. Sounds like a lot of horrible abuse.

I haven't found any connection. Jane Whaley was apparently a Rhema graduate, but "[u]pon hearing of the deliverances and their unbiblical twisting of the Scriptures concerning deliverance - in particular the case of a 54-year-old woman having a prescription-drug reaction who was held at WOFF for 13 days while members tried to expel demons - Hagin in the late 1980s distanced himself from the Whaleys, removed their affiliation with his Rhema group of churches, and denounced their deliverance teachings."

Cojak, I think this is what I remembered--the flyers being placed on the windshields, and I don't think I remember it from when it happened but just reading about it much later. It pains me to think this has been going on SO LONG. God have mercy!

Local residents of Spindale, NC, became concerned enough to place flyers on automobile windshields last year during a worship service at the Word of Faith Fellowship. According to Daily Courier, the flyer's intended purpose was "to expose the underlying deception for the spiritual and psychological welfare of all who are involved" at Word of Faith. It pleads with church members to leave. The flyer reads, "Please don't let your fear and indecision hold you in bondage to an abusive church any longer. Escape the deception and manipulation by coming out of this group immediately for the sake of yourself and those who love you. The time has come to let the truth set you free. Many prayers are being lifted up on your behalf" (28 February 1995).

My nephew, an unbeliever, posted an article about this church today.

http://abc11.com/religion/nc-church-has-unconventional-rules-for-sex-and-marriage/1774607/

I told him it was ridiculous & crazy, and I would run as hard as I could to get away from these people. This doesn't have anything to do with God...it has to do with control.

It's really sad people would be deceived to follow these folks!

The whole thing sounds weird. I was just concerned mainly that this would not reference the COG. Noting some comments I read.
Many people want to see/hear from God and someone who is charismatic in speech can sway people (In politics or religion).

This is the very reason the religious world is under attack. We have reprobates who pose as men and women of God for power and money. With all due respect to those who say what goes on in our church is OUR business, either by actions or financially, thinking people begin to wonder. We may be sheep, but we do not have to be Deaf & DUMB sheep.

WE in the pew should not have to wonder what goes on, but should be aware.

I am always amazed when someone says I was there 17-25 years afraid to question God, after all this was God's representative on earth. He or She said so.(and they were believable). They are CONTROLLED!

I will admit I know brain washing. Any USMC member knows brain washing. Definitely not BAD mind control but still control. No better military force in the world. I served in the USMC,USAF, & USN, and I am here to tell you very few marines will question an order from a senior. We knew HE was right. In our minds he was protecting himself and me.
I am sure the people in groups like this church are being controlled. They KNOW the leader is RIGHT, they are convinced. It has been driven into their heads since youth, or young vulnerability.

If the Whatley's were to go to court, they will probably win. It is pretty hard to prove that "GOD did not direct the Whatley's."

Unless it comes to a show and tell like Moses and the Pharaoh. Twisted Evil

I would definitely never be able to be a part of that church! 🤡

One does have to wonder how they actually enforce the sex rules though! 🤔😳

Those are some unbiblical and downright idiotic rules for marriage and sex. But I wouldn't automatically trust a news media report about a church, either. I think we should all pay each other that courtesy. Your church could be next.

It does seem like every so many years I hear about a church in N.C. where they think they cast demons out of you if they make you vomit. Is it a different church each time, or is it the same one? I think I've read about this place before.

I also wonder how they enforce the wedding night rules, if they are for real. It reminds me of movies about kings and queens where the king gets married and the priest and various government officials join the king and queen to their chamber to witness the consummation, conducted through some kind of thick robes.

Don't lose sight of the big picture here. A very controlling cult has damaged many lives for many years and in the name of the Lord. May God bring healing to those who were damaged so they don't turn away from him.

That was my first impression also Link, then I kept reading and there are over 40 former members who back each other on their memory as children.
Hey link, I actually thought of you when I placed the post, knowing you would know where Spindale was. If not. it is between Rutherfordton and Forest City on US 74.

Enforcement of Sex rules: The parties are sworn to report all failings to the Leader. Some are so controlled that they 'confess' to the LEADER!

Pitiful. Sad

If a "leader" wants to know about what my wife and I do imo they have a sex problem themselves.

Why else would my pastor/leader want to be involved (even a report") in my bedroom? Embarassed

It's about controlling every aspect of the cult member's life so that the cult member lives in fear and submission to the authoritarian leader. It works by isolating the cult members from outside influences which could help them see a way to break free from the bondage.

If you know anything about Contemporary Christian music from the late 70s and early 80s you probably remember the Joe English Band. Joe English was the drummer for Wings before getting saved.

He also belonged to the WOFF though he is no longer a member.

He left in 2016

I think they(WOFF) may had something to do with him vanishing from the CCM scene. I have read on some forums they maintained a tight reign on people. But I also read he had some health issues that kept him from performing.

So this place is located in mountains of NC. That might kind of explain some of this too. I don't know much about it, but from what I've read mountain folk tend to be sort of clannish. I can see if some of them still have that mentality that a strong religious figure could perhaps take advantage of them.

I don't know...just a thought. But hard to believe anyone would let someone control them that much in this day & age.
