I couldn't help it... but I just burst out laughing when I read this one. Sometimes you just gotta laugh.

My wife usually would go to the nursery to breastfeed our babies, mainly just because she didn't want anyone to possibly be offended.

I never understood why it would bother anyone as long as everything was modestly covered. It's a totally natural thing that is in no way shameful.

To compare the poor young mom in the opening post to a stripper (as some in her church apparently did) is astounding. Wonder if that was the same church that recently voted to not allow biracial couples in their church.

I agree that this church handled this poorly... but we also don't know truly what happened, if the woman was really covered or if she was just an instigator with an agenda....

Inspired Hillbilly,

That's exactly the point I was attempting to make in the original post about women being "proud" these days to nurse. I don't mean that in a way of flaunting it, I mean it in a way of truly feeling pleased, blessed and honored to provide our babies with the best. There are SO many more demands on us now than ever before. I work 3 days a week and I have a 4 year old, almost 3 year old and 4 month old. On my days off, we do not sit at home every day. I grocery shop with my children, we run errands, we go to church, we go to dr appts, we are out and about. To take the extra time and sacrifice to spend hours a day nursing is a HUGE commitment. Too many moms give up because it's not convenient.

That's why it offends me so much when other folks act like we are dirty or "wrong" to nurse in public as if all we should be doing is sitting at home all day caring for the kids (or spending every free moment at home pumping for the times we are out). It's not feasible with all the other demands.

Ergo, yes. Our generation is very pleased with ourselves for committing to giving our babies the very best when so many choose to formula feed. It's a huge time commitment, it's clearly not that accepted in our society anymore and it's a sacrifice. It is also a bond with my children that I wouldn't change for ANY amount of sleep or modesty.

I hear you.

I think it is unfortunate that so many in our culture sexualize breastfeeding or stigmatize it. In this culture, I definitely think breastfeeding mothers should cover up. (I'd prefer they do in all other cultures if I am around, because if it isn't my wife, it would make me uncomfortable--but I realize I am the product of my culture.)

I realize it is a huge commitment. I've got a one-month old. Just feeding her with a bottle it is extremely time consuming to feed her and hard to try to get anything else done. If an exclusively breastfeeding mother takes her baby outside, she wants to be able to feed that little one when he or she is hungry.

A church should be figuring out a way to feed one of the 'little ones' that God cares so much about and making that mother feel comfortable. Why not put up some kind of a 'breast feeding tent' in the corner if you don't have any other facilities? I think churches should encourage breastfeeding. The widows who are allowed on the list 'have raised children.' Women raising children is a noble endeavor, something that godly women do, and the church should be behind them doing their best 100%.

When I hear about some ignorant, probably young, cop who cites a woman for breastfeeding her child in her car, or some church that forces a breastfeeding mother to her car, I certainly can see why such an injustice would make a parent or anyone else who hears about it angry. Shouldn't the police and churches protect babies? Don't they like babies? It seems inconsistent for a church to be against murdering babies in the womb, but not be supportive of feeding the baby the way God designed.

Did the preacher preach on this?
II Corinthians 6:12
"12Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. "

Gotta' love that KJV.

Paige has had the best arguments on this issue imho.

i do believe younger women are more likely to nurse in a social setting - modestly covered, of course.

I think the moms who do this think breasts should not be sexualized, and that breast feeding should not be sexualized. The are probably right, but the culture doesn't see it that way. This is something that needs to be discussed delicately, I suppose.

I think a breast feeding tent or screened off section in the room with everyone else is a good solution if it fits the layout. You could sell it as a way to give moms the privacy they need to not have people stare at them, but I suppose some moms who think everyone should be fine with exposed nursing breasts might not go for that.

Or of the mom's milk isn't enough for the baby.

I haven't had the pleasure of learning all the ups and downs of nursing yet, although I am 8 months pregnant and am planning on nursing. I, for one plan on covering it all up. I understand there are going to be inconveniences, like not estimating my time correctly and baby getting hungry while I'm out, or forgetting a bottle, but I plan on avoiding any type of public nursing at all costs (and by public I mean completely covered, myself and baby). It's a natural thing, but that doesn't mean I have to flaunt my breast and my choice as a mother to nurse in public. Nursing isn't sexual but breasts are and I have a hard time faulting a man for looking in the direction of a nursing mother whose breast or cleavage is exposed when it can be avoided in the first place. Maybe even though we have a right to nurse in public, we can humble ourselves and keep it covered up for the sake of those around us. Just a thought... Newbie

Post Re: Cover It Link
It can be difficult to cover everything completely while the baby is getting situated without some help. I suppose mothers can leave the room.

I read a post on a house church forum from a father who was really irritated with someone he did church with who was offended at a covered mother nursing her baby. I told him I understood why he would be upset, but the brother probably had some weird out-of-the-norm lust issues he was dealing with, and urged him to be careful with this fellow and his weak conscience. Some guys who aren't fathers are totally weirded out by the idea. I guess some people are sheltered, or maybe they are warped by some nitch versions of porn that feature nursing. (Never seen it, but I remember a construction worker telling me about pregnant and nursing mother porn back about 20 years ago.)

I wonder if this is why the synagogues seated men and women separately.

Suffer the children to be fed, and forbid them not. (Thus sayeth Bonnie.)

HWJF
(How was Jesus fed?)

Even though the woman wasn't quite grasping the fundamentals of the kingdom, you have to admire her for hollering out to Jesus, blessed are the breasts that nursed you!

I'm cool with women breastfeeding anywhere if it's covered, and I really don't have too much of an issue even if it's not covered unless I get a militant, in-your-face vibe. It shouldn't be an issue to explain to the other children; children should know where milk comes from (in humans and animals) and what it's for.

Mothers should be encouraged to breastfeed. Churches should accommodate them.

I have a riddle for those who are just too uptight about the whole milk issue.
Q. Why did the cow jump over the moon?
A. Because the farmer had cold hands.

I don't know how you can rightly be offended at some of the other comments and images you've complained about and be as crude as this yourself. Confused

i don't think anyone here is advocating nursing in such a way where any part of the breast is exposed. I think people are defending the right to do it period! Many on here seem to insinuate that doing it in public at all is gross and inappropriate and should be done in some back room somewhere. Any woman with any sense of modesty wouldn't let her boob hang out while she's nursing...I know the times Paige has nursed in public, you wouldn't even know there was a baby under the blanket. They do make some very modest, inexpensive nursing shawls too:

While we're on the subject, I thought I would check in to report that I nursed in church tonight.

Here's how it went down: took a warmed bottle with us so Grant would fall asleep during service. Surprise, surprise, he wanted nothing to do with it. Started getting fussy when the preaching started and to be honest, I'm tired of having to miss the word every single week because of quickly racing my fussy baby out of the sanctuary.

It's a huge church that is dimly lit, so I took him to the very back where there are chairs lined against the wall without any lights shining on them. I watched at least 5 other moms have to leave with their fussy infant. Troy eventually came back to join me. About that time, a mom who joined me whipped out her nursing shawl to breastfeed and I was like, oh yes, it's on. Covered myself with a blanket, latched Grant on and he was asleep in 2 minutes. Not a single person had any idea 2 of us moms were discreetly sitting in the back feeding our babies. We didn't have to leave the service. We distracted no one. No one saw even a flash of our boobs. But we got the job done - fed our babies, put them to sleep and were still spiritually fed at the same time.
