SURPASSING RIGHTEOUSNESS
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Mat. 5:20
The pharisees had mastered "living right".
They were experts in keeping religious rules.
They didn't sleep with their neighbors wife.
They didn't kill their brother.
They would condemn you if you didn't "live right".
Jesus has given us something better than self-righteousness.
He has given us a surpassing righteousness...His righteousness.
Now our surpassing righteousness is not based on us "living right".
It's "on the basis of faith".
"and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith," Phil. 3:9
