Available today! My team and I would really feel good if we were able to help some great pastors make a move from maintenance to mission. If you are contemplating such a shift, please take a look.
Upon previewing Shift, my immediate impression was that somehow Phil Underwood had been able to interview 80 percent of the pastors and church staff members in America and had discerned from them the kind of dissatisfaction that arises when someone realizes there must be a better way, but is not sure exactly what it is. His perceptive analysis and subsequent insightful recommendation for church redirection is a spiritual prescription that makes abundant sense.

In this book, my friend Phil cleverly combines the power of narrative and the power of timely ideas to make a point about ministry impact. He is not only a warm-hearted leader ministering in a local church, but also proves to be a good guide for others taking their churches on a similar journey.

I love what Phil is doing with this new book of his. I know the wonderful fulfillment and yet the dizzying disappointment of building a large church, with an attractional model. Multitudes of church leaders, over the years, came to see how we were doing, what we were doing. However, the more we succeeded, the more I grew suspicious, that we were grasping a part of what the church was all about, and yet were missing an important piece of it. In recent years there have been several great books around how to develop a healthy rhythm around the 'gathered' and 'scattered' church models. and what does it mean to live missionally. But this is the first time I've seen a book try to personalize it all in a story, that is actually the personal story of so many of us leaders. In someone's personal story (even when it's fictionalized) we can find much more of ourselves, than in primary instruction or teaching. This book accomplishes that. I've known Phil for a couple of decades and know firsthand the grand passion he carries, to help facilitate the experience of an impactful church. Read this book and see if you can't discover even more of what God might be saying to you.

Phil Underwood is that rara avis that rare bird among consultants. He not only understands the nature of the church as a missional community; he can read and braille a church culture in record time, and help you discover yourself how to turn monuments and museums into movements, and mission fields into mission forces. His spirit is affirming, encouraging, upbeat, and you always want to be around him because of his inspirations for your aspirations. If you want someone to lead you or your faith community away from the harbor of maintenance and safety and towards open waters of mission, especially the 'oceanic' feelings that come from living as Jesus lived, then Phil is your guide.
