Peter stood up 2,000 years ago and declared that "this is that". He declared that "this" was "the last days" when the sun would turn to darkness and the moon into blood. Then, in AD 70, it happened.
Gen 37:9 Now he had still another dream, and related it to his brothers, and said, “Lo, I have had still another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 He related it to his father and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have had? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow ourselves down before you to the ground?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.
Acts 2:20 The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
Mark 13:24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.
Mat 23:34 “Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, 35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation
When Jesus prophesied that "the guilt of all the righteous blook shed on earth" would come "upon this generation", the nation of Israel was destroyed within 40 years. The sun was dark, the moon bled and the stars fell.
From EyewitnessofHistory.com:
"In the year 66 AD the Jews of Judea rebelled against their Roman masters. In response, the Emperor Nero dispatched an army under the generalship of Vespasian to restore order. By the year 68, resistance in the northern part of the province had been eradicated and the Romans turned their full attention to the subjugation of Jerusalem. That same year, the Emperor Nero died by his own hand, creating a power vacuum in Rome. In the resultant chaos, Vespasian was declared Emperor and returned to the Imperial City. It fell to his son, Titus, to lead the remaining army in the assault on Jerusalem.
Roman CenturianThe Roman legions surrounded the city and began to slowly squeeze the life out of the Jewish stronghold. By the year 70, the attackers had breached Jerusalem's outer walls and began a systematic ransacking of the city. The assault culminated in the burning and destruction of the Temple that served as the center of Judaism.
In victory, the Romans slaughtered thousands. Of those sparred from death: thousands more were enslaved and sent to toil in the mines of Egypt, others were dispersed to arenas throughout the Empire to be butchered for the amusement of the public. The Temple's sacred relics were taken to Rome where they were displayed in celebration of the victory.
The rebellion sputtered on for another three years and was finally extinguished in 73 AD with the fall of the various pockets of resistance including the stronghold at Masada."
When Peter declared the beginning of the Spirit was the last days of the letter (Acts 2:17;2 Pet 3:3-13), when "the heavens and the earth" would pass away by fire and the "elements" ("stoicheion" - literally the "letters" or the Law - Gal. 4:3,9; Col 2:8,20) he meant it.
When the writer of Hebrews declared that that Jesus appeared in the last days (Heb 1:2; 9:26) to put away sin and that the old covenant was "vanishing" (Heb 8:12), and that the vengeance of God was coming (Heb. 10:30) he meant it.
When James declared it was the "last days" (Jam 5:1-6), a day of weeping and howling (Jam 5:1) and consuming fire (Jam 5:3) for the rich who "condemned and put to death the righteous man" (Jam 5:6)
When John declared it "the last hour" because antichrist had already appeared (1 Jn 2:18), he was right.
None of these men were wrong. The blood of all the righteous, the vengeance of God fell on that generation. The stars fell, the sun was darkened and the moon turned to blood. The elements melted with fire and "heaven and earth" (the Jewish temple) passed away. _________________ I'm not saved because I'm good. I'm saved because He's good!
