Bye, bye Hagar! |
bradfreeman |
This week on the Podcast:
"Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law?" Gal 4:21
There are people who will fight you if you tell them they aren't under the 10 commandments. The "want to be under law".
This is exactly who Paul is talking to in Galatians 4.
"For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise." Gal 4:22,23
Being under the Law means finding your life in the flesh. It means basing your standing before God on how well you keep the rules, how strong you are, how dedicated you are, how faithful you are, how much you do, how much you give and how much you give up for God.
Being under grace means finding your life in the Spirit. It means basing your standing before God on how God kept His promise, how strong He is, how dedicated Jesus is, how faithful He is, how much He did, how much He gave and how much He gave up for you.
Our birth is not "according to the flesh". It's not about who we are or what we do in the flesh.
Our birth is "through the promise". It's about who He is and what He did keeping His promise by sending His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh.
"This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother." Gal 4:24-26
Hagar is Mt. Sinai, the Law, the present Jerusalem, the natural Jew.
Hagar was from Egypt. She is in slavery.
Her children are in bondage too. But she isn't our mother.
"But what does the Scripture say?
“Cast out the bondwoman and her son,
For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”" Gal 4:30
There is no place in the household of faith and freedom for Hagar.
Some think Sarah (grace) isn't strong enough to raise the kids.
Some think we need Sarah and Hagar in the house, a "balance" of Law and grace.
Cast out the bondwoman.
Hagar has to go. Law has to go. The idea that who we are in the flesh or what we do in the flesh has anything to do with our righteousness, blessing or life has to go.
We live by faith in a God who keeps His promise.
We are not slaves working for a place in the house.
We are sons, born into the family, born into freedom. _________________ I'm not saved because I'm good. I'm saved because He's good!

There also those who think they are going to Heaven because they've done a better job than others at keeping the 10 Commandments. The best way to deal with them is to use the 10 Commandments to strip them of self-righteousness and leave them crying, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Then you give them the gospel of grace. They have been humbled by the Law and God only gives grace to the humble. _________________ "It is doubtful if any Trinitarian Pentecostals have ever professed to believe in three gods, and Oneness Pentecostals should not claim that they do." - Daniel Segraves UPCI |

Also, why do you prefer Roth over Hagar? _________________ "It is doubtful if any Trinitarian Pentecostals have ever professed to believe in three gods, and Oneness Pentecostals should not claim that they do." - Daniel Segraves UPCI |
