Post Who was this person? Ernie Long
Mark 9:38-40 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part.

Was he part of the seventy?

Did the twelve know about the seventy?

Luke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.

I'm thinking this is similar to the Lord telling Elijah in 1 Kings 19:18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him. when Elijah said in vs 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

I am sure no one can know that, but I am sure SOME fit in that category today. Humans tend to want things orderly and in 'their' box of understanding.

We must be sure we do not take the stand that includes those that are "IMPOSTERS". Discernment is a quality long lost in a modern society. Now we can 'judge' people we never see or touch. TV and the net are sometimes an aid to Charltons, TV can make mice talk! Shocked

Post Is this a mystery Ernie Long
are we left to speculate?

Why mention it, if it isn't important?

I thought I would bring it to the top to see if anyone with biblical knowledge has any idea who this person was. Acts Enthusiast

Post I don't know but here are diakoneo
two old opinions:

Albert Barnes:
Quote:
We saw one ... - There is no improbability in supposing that this might have been one of the disciples of John, or one of the seventy whom Jesus had sent out, and who, though he did not “personally” attend on Jesus, yet had the power of working miracles. There is no evidence that he was merely an “exorcist,” or that he used the name of Jesus merely as a pretence.

Adam Clarke:
Quote:
We saw one casting out devils in thy name - It can scarcely be supposed that a man who knew nothing of Christ, or who was only a common exorcist, could be able to work a miracle in Christ’s name; we may therefore safely imagine that this was either one of John the Baptist’s disciples, who, at his master’s command, had believed in Jesus, or one of the seventy, whom Christ had sent out, Luk_10:1-7, who, after he had fulfilled his commission, had retired from accompanying the other disciples; but as he still held fast his faith in Christ, and walked in good conscience, the influence of his Master still continued with him, so that he could cast out demons as well as the other disciples.

I suppose if one thinks only people Jesus specifically appointed and sent out could cast out demons, insisting that he had to be one of the 70 would make sense. I'm not saying you are doing that.

Jesus, when accused of casting out demons by Beelzebub, asked if he cast out demons by Beelzebub, 'by whom do your children cast them out'. Jews had methods of exorcism, and apparently some of them worked. The Jews were astonished at His authority casting out demons.

It could have been some of the 70 who cast out demons, but I think it is more likely that some people heard Jesus' message, believed that God sent Him, and cast out demons in His name. Maybe they saw Jesus cast out a demon or one of the apostles casting out demons in His name and imitated it.

Btw, if anyone says they don't believe in miracles for today but believes Christians still cast out demons in Jesus' name, he's contradicting himself, since Jesus implied that casting out demons in his name is a sign/miracle.
