Did the shepherds provide bread to Mary and Joseph? |
Ernie Long |
I had a couple who had attended our church moved to Michigan due to his job, visit us this past Sunday. They found a church in Lansing and she was telling us how much they love this church because it is a lot like ours.
She said back at Christmas the pastor preach a series about Christmas and said that he said the shepherds had provide bread to Mary and Joseph. Also, the shepherds sold bread in Bethlehem.
I know that Bethlehem means "House of Bread." But I have never heard of shepherds making or selling bread in Bethlehem.
I'm thinking that she may have heard him wrong. Does anyone know if the shepherds did make and sell bread in Bethlehem? |

Wow, never heard that.
Why would shepherds, whose time and energy is spent tending flocks sell bread?
They did not have the preservatives and processes we have to day to keep bread fresh and if someone was going to sell bread, why would it be vagabond shepherds? It was most likely farmers who did not move around much and had means to store grain until time to grind and make the bread or merchants who had grain storage facilities and could take advantage of the process.
From what I understand about shepherds they were moving around a lot so it just wouldn't make sense.
If someone has better information, I would love to hear it. |

Welcome to "Popular Christianity 101" Ernie.
Folk don't need Bible to support stuff, if it sounds like a "new thing" they gonna go with it. |

That's a first for me. You know, the three wise men had gold, frankincense and myrrh. If we could put a piece of bread in the shepherd's hand they would at least have something.
I'm wondering if this is from Catholic tradition, the Apocrypha or Early church fathers. Or the book of Hezekiah. |

Supposition I suppose
BUT we still have the little drummer boy from one of the gospels, I am sure.

Sounds like nonsense some people preach.
Shepherds sometimes road camels. Next year he can preach they rode camel cigarettes.
Or maybe someone heard him wrong.
Or maybe he was talking in 70's slang, saying the three wise men gave them a lot of 'bread' because of the gold, and they got mixed up and thought he was talking about the shepherds. It's hard to know on this second hand accounts. _________________ Link |
