Post Hyperbole Ernie Long
In all seriousness, would those of you who believe Jesus used hyperbole's, please give us all the scriptures that are meant to be taken as such and why? Just asking for book, chapter, and verse.

I guess I've been naive all my life and just took the Bible as God's Holy Word, where if He said I could do it, have it, or give it... then I took Him at His word.

Before anyone attacks and ask if I have done everything He said I could do, attained everything He said I could have, or given everything He said I should or could give... the answer is no, I haven't. But, that is on me and not on Christ or His Word.

Just wanting to understand why there is such a divide in believing what is considered figurative and literal.

if viewed in context of vv. 28 where Jesus says sin comes from the heart (see Matthew 15:19)

Here's a rather obvious one, unless perhaps one believes somehow that Jesus taught that we must literally cannibalize his body:

John 6:53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. ESV

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, Matt. 6:3 ESV

(The above is quite literally impossible).

Mark 10:29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, 30But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

So, if understood strictly literally, one who leaves his house, brothers, sisters, mother or wife for the sake of Christ and the gospel, will literally receive a hundred times as many houses, family members, etc. in this life, along with persecutions.

Again, the above (at least the latter half of it) is quite literally impossible.

Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple. NIV

Both the Old and New Testaments, as well as Jesus himself (e.g., Matt 15:4-9), say quite emphatically that one of the primary commandments of God is to HONOR your father and your mother. Jesus even says we are to LOVE even our ENEMIES, not hate them. And yet if Luke 14:26 is to be taken strictly literally, we would have to literally HATE our own family members or else we cannot be His disciple.

John 21:25

Also, this is not directed at Ernie, after reading several of the comments I'm curious if some of the respondents understand hyperbole. Of course hyperbole, along with many other figures of speech (simile, metaphor, etc.) are used throughout Scripture. But, not all symbolism is hyperbole.

Cut your hand off, pluck out your eye, etc. Camel through the eye of a needle. These are shocking statements (hyperbole) intended to shock the listener into thoughtful consideration of spiritual truths.

The bible is replete with hyperbole and symbolism Revelation 14:20

Post I know what a hyperbole is, but..... Ernie Long
from what I have read here so far is, IF we haven't seen it, done it or someone who we deem to be more knowledgeable than we, has wrote about it, then it is a hyperbole.

Are these hyperbole's since no one here has experienced it?

Matthew 1:18

Matthew 14:28-29

Luke 2:9-10

Acts 2:1-4

Acts 9:1-9

What makes one an hyperbole and not another?

Maybe, just maybe, the things we consider to be hyperboles are things that seem so outrageous to us that we can't wrap our minds around them and so it is easier to say that Jesus didn't really mean what He said, but said those things to make a point.

Ernie,

None of those passages contain any hint of hyperbole. Nor do I think they are necessarily symbolism or figurative.

I positively affirm the miracles that are recorded in Scripture, such as you have listed references to, Ernie. Hyperbole, metaphor, figurative language is another thing altogether. But I have given sufficient examples of such, and need not try to reason further with you regarding this. God bless! [Insert Acts Pun Here]

Let me ask a question Ernie. Do you believe a camel can fit through the eye of a needle? Do you believe wealthy people can be saved, or only the poor?

When the Psalmist says in Psalm 119:136 that he has cried "rivers of tears"- does that mean that the Hudson, The Tigris, and the Euphrates literally poured from his tear ducts?

I agree with Zefo and Wyatt. The examples you cited are not hyperbole. They are actual recorded historical miracles, which I also affirm to be true without question. Acts Enthusiast
