How do you teach Apostle Paul's admonition for slaves to obey their Master? |

Our Statement of Faith says, "We accept the New Testament as our only rule of faith and practice."
How do you teach and explain to audiences today, Apostle Paul's New Testament admonition in Ephesians 6:5 and Colossians 3:22, that slaves are to "Obey" their Master.

In the cultural context of that day, slavery was a fact of the everyday life. The gospel does bring freedom from slavery to sin, but it does not necessarily change cultural norms quickly. We certainly see in the Golden Rule the basis for the eventual abolition of slavery. Paul encouraged Philemon to receive his escaped slave, Onesimus back as a brother. One additional thing to note is that slavery allowed for in the Old Testament was oftentimes meant a way to pay off debt, and was not intended to be slavery in perpetuity, with the kinds of physical and/or sexual abuse that often accompanied slavery in, say, the United States prior to the terrible War Between the States. |

QW makes some good points! As an aside, I find it interesting that other religious/sacred texts are not held to the level of scrutiny as the Bible. I seldom hear people complain about the outrageous doctrines of the LDS or the “hate speech†of the Koran.
In dealing with a text like Doyle shared, I try to look for the underlying principle. Few analogies are perfect. For example, most of us have never been a slave or owned a slave. But we do understand being subject to authority figures. |

Both QW and Da Sheik have very insightful comments. Some good meat for answers to questions that do arise in this day.
Very good points. _________________ Some facts but mostly just my opinion!

He related it much to an employee and employer relationship in our modern society. _________________ Doctor of Bovinamodulation |
