Post Promise ring? JLarry
I thought a promise ring was a promise to keep ones virginity.

We have a family member who is "shacking up". Here significant other gave her a "promise ring". He "promised" to stay faithful to her.

Here is what I found on Google.

Quote:
Promise rings are most commonly given to a romantic partner as a sign of commitment that isn't quite engagement. It's a simple way to show how you feel and to say, “I'm here to stay.” However, a promise ring is also appropriate for a friend or family member, serving as a symbol for a meaning of your choice.

Over time words seem to take on a different meaning. Such as the word "gay", I was taught a very different meaning than it is today.

Now we have to change the words of a famous Christmas song. "Dawn we now our gay apparel".

I live under a rock, I have never heard of a promise ring. I notice it is not quite an engagement ring, I cannot fit my mind around that.

If EVERY family has not faced the 'Living together' (shacking-up to you OLD FOLK lol) they will. I NEVER in my wildest dreams thought it would happen in my family, but it has. One couple did finally get married BEFORE a child was conceived.

In my WILDEST DREAMS I would have shacked up, but MY GIRL would NEVER have even THOUGHT OF IT. Back then she would have been considered a 'bad girl' and COG girls were not 'BAD girls'. Embarassed

NOT EVEN WITH AN ENGAGEMENT RING (of course that itself was a sin) much less a PROMISE RING? Sleep together before marriage? Not on her life! Shocked

Cojak, I know the feeling. In our family we now have the second generation of "shacking".

Even my sister "shaked" for about 10 years. Good news is she left the guy and is now back to where she needs to be with the Lord. Yes, the Lord can turn things around.

Thank God he turned my life around, April 1970. If that had not happened my new bride and I would have never made it.

I've tried to teach my children the actual Biblical marriage in that there is no such thing as "pre-marital" sex. And not that I don't believe in the ceremony and "license" aspect of modern western marriage, I do, but we've lost a lot of the actual Biblical understanding of what marriage is. My son is now in his first serious courtship and I've told him that one of the many reasons not to engage in sexual union prior to the ceremony is that no matter what your culture may say, once you have committed that union, you are indeed in the marriage covenant according to the Bible and that you may never have another person without willfully sinning the sin of adultery, not to mention the guilt of putting the other person in the same position of willful sin in their future should you both abandon your obligations to each other. But no, we now live in a society that even pastors will council those that have so engaged to break-up rather than confirm the fact that the two have already become one flesh whether or not it was a good idea prior. Its a sobering thought, but we don't usually even attempt the conversation in this culture, because in the end, even the (western) church believes in some sort of sexual-freedom outside of the Biblical precepts. For instance in about 2 posts, you'll see someone insist that its better to break up and marry someone else at some point later in life than to "continue a mistake". While that sounds good and is an easier path, its not biblical. Golf Cart Mafia Capo Famiglia

If the sex act is itself marriage, one then has to wonder why Paul referred to fornication as sin instead of marriage. [Insert Acts Pun Here]

It seems like I remember hearing of kids back when I was in high school who'd give promise rings. A guy would give his girlfriend a promise ring because he was too young to propose. I've heard of them for virginity, too.
